Diary of a White Tower Novice - 8th day of the month of Amadaine, year 1671.
Well, It’s been two weeks or there abouts since I arrived at the illustrious White Tower. Eisha I think was pretty hurt about me coming here without her, and mom tried to hide her tears, but well! Tear the DarkOnes toenails off! This is not… how I wanted things to be! Well not exactly. I'm half excited to be here.. and half utterly despondent at the same time. I promised Eisha I’d tell her everything, and I finally managed to find a spare notebook (actually I caught and sold some fish from a nearby hole to buy it, Da would be proud!) , so I’m starting a diary to record things. I know I might have to be careful about sending letters, but this way I’ll be able to tell her everything when I see her next. Oh and for any other nosy novices or what have you, I plan on keeping this perfectly boring, SO KEEP YOUR EYES OUT OF MY DIARY!!!!
Burn the shadow its cold here! I miss Mayene terribly already, I know some say the beaches stink of seaweed and rot, but I miss the salt and the sea dearly! Who will help Pa with the lumber, and who will help Aunt Shaye with the oil infusions? At least we got that last batch done just in time! This year she let me try a mix of black garlic truffle and rosemary, and second batch of tangerine, with just a hint of basil, I think they’ll be fantastic! I do hope they’ll let me return to help next year, especially if their hunch is true about my uh, special contributions!
So. Right. The Tower. Being a novice. It’s certainly been interesting. I actually met my first proper Aes Sedai, Ashlynn Sedai, while making my way from Camelyn to Tar Valon. She was ever so helpful, and taught me a great deal about some of the local towns (and some of it’s dangers too!). I don’t even think she knew I was headed to the White Tower at first, somehow that came out after the fact. But she did help me with being added to the novice book, and if you can believe it, she ever so kindly introduced me to the Amylin herself on my first day here! I mean, I only saw her long enough to curtsey awkwardly and feel a fool, but still! It's made all the troubles getting here so far seem worth it, and gives me hope that I might earn a place here.
I have so much more to write about my first few weeks, but it’s getting late and I’m awfully tired, I despair at how soon the morning will come. So for now, I’m going to short hand some notes about about a conversation I had with Chloro Sedai earlier this evening before I forget the details. We’re suppose to learn all we can, so I think it makes sense to take note of things now, in case they become important later, and well, also so I can keep my promise Eisha.
A conversation with Chloro Sedai:
Written in shortand:
The scribe says 'Chloro Sedai requests your presence in the Gray's Meeting
Room, kaelyn.'
You say 'Yes Chloro Sedai'
You say 'How has your day been? '
You say 'I've heard you've been defending lands far north of here. '
You say 'Well'
You say 'I think fairly well!'
You say 'I've been keeping up with daily chores, and'
You say 'I've been able to run some errands to help with Kitchen stores, '
You say 'I've also been helping Sheriam Sedai. '
You say 'with all that I've also manage to have lessons from each of the Ajah. '
You say 'I have had some of that as well'
You say 'I have tried to balance rest, with learning the ways of the Tower, and how to live in Tar Valon'
You say 'did you now that catching frogs, of all things, is THE most
impossible task? '
You say 'I dare say beating Trollocs must be easier!'
Chloro says 'That is always the best way to move forward. I hear you have
met some of my sisters, however, have you had a chance to meet any novices or other accepted?'
You say 'I've mostly spent time with yourself, and Ashlynn Sedai. '
Chloro says 'I see, we shall have to remedy that, even if I have to walk
onto the Accepted Gallery myself...'
You say 'I was also able to spend some time with Sarinda Sedai as well. '
Chloro says 'What did you learn from Sarinda Sedai?'
You say 'Sarinda Sedai gave lessons on how to tie hold weaves, how to
release them, '
You say 'and she had some insight on what might be some good choices for weaves to practice next'
Chloro says 'I see, I hear she also gave you a lesson on travel restrictions
as well.'
You say 'that is, she mentioned how weaving blind on enemies helps in battle.
You say 'I've wanted to try it, though in the swamps just out side the city,
I'm mostly practising on trees, as I really do not like harming the animals out
there. '
You say 'and as Im sure you can imagine, blind doesn't work so well on them.
Chloro says 'That was a clever attempt to pivot child, however your speaking to a master politician. What did Sarinda Sedai teach you bout the novice travel restrictions.'
You say 'You know, I was thinking about lessons from the Green Ajah on the Trollocs. '
You say 'oh! Pardon me! '
You say 'indeed she did! '
You say 'I was having such trouble catching frogs are part of an assignment, that I wondered if I wasnt' loooking in teh right place. And since I could be on the east side of the tower, I decided to check the west side, I notice on my crude map that Tar Valon was still part of the name for the area. '
You say 'but as I'm sure you heard, I was mistaken. '
You say 'She very kindly explained and showed me where the boundaries are for Novices. '
You say 'And I still havnt' figured out the frogs! Light help me!'
Chloro says 'I do not know many Sedai that would take kindly to finding them about the Tower, where I in that novices shoes, I might settle on watching them from afar.'
You say 'its.... *SIGH* complicated I guess. '
You say 'Sheriam Sedai requested that I'm to bring a golden haired Novice to her, and I did find her in the library, however shes not intersted in speaking with me in any way excpet to save for these light blasted frogs! Pardon my.. uhm.. right. '
You say 'I was hoping if I brought her these frogs, she'd then come with me.
You say 'Most recently I have been working on 'blind', as requested and suggested'
Chloro says 'have you learned any support weaves?'
You say 'I have a small amount of healing ability, '
You say 'but to be honest I guess I havn't put as much focus and time into
it, as I'm not really in a situation to help others much. I do intend to grow in
this. 'I guess channeling strength and armour might be considered support?
You say 'by your leave, may I channel to create water? '
Chloro says 'Those two weaves can turn the tide of battle more than you can conceive. I would suggest you perfect weaving them. '
Chloro says 'Request granted, you may channel.'
You say 'Thank you'
You say 'May I ask why you chose the Grey Ajah? '
Chloro says 'Strength and Armor, can bolster the forces you are with, or
give advantage to another channeler aiding in battle. Often, it is not battle
weaves that win a war, but the support given through healing, armor and Strength that allow us to push back the shadow.'
Chloro says 'I come from the north, past Faldara, where the winters can be bone chilling, and Trollocs are common knowledge. Kandor is not a nation for the weak. '
Chloro says 'I am a strong healer, adept channeler, and have been a lead
investigator. However, one thing was clear to me.'
Chloro says 'Should the Trolloc wars, or the Last battle come, who would
keep the nations together and ready to rally to the north to. Who would ride
behind the Green, Red and Blue Ajahs as they clashed with the Shadow?'
Chloro says 'An army made of up men and women from every nation would be
needed. As a Gray, I try to keep the nations at peace, and avoid wars. '
You say 'I can see the sense in that. '
You say 'As Servants of All, I would think peace is our main priority. '
You say 'once there is peace, then society can focus on flourishing. '
Chloro says 'Some Ajahs require you to channel far more than others. Greens,
Reds, Yellows, and even Browns all have abilities that require channeling. White,
Blue and Gray can do majority of their work without channeling.'
You say 'but building must be difficult when contending with war and battles.
Chloro says 'There is a second reason I chose Gray though Novice Kaelyn.'
Chloro says 'Not every war was started by dark friends, not every mistake on
the political stage was started by them, but given the chance, they could light a
powder keg in days. My sisters fight the shadow you can see. Trollocs, Fades,
Dreadlords, Drak'ghar. The Gray and Blue Ajahs, fight the shadow you cannot always
see. Darkfriends are said to exist in the lowest slums and highest courts.'
You say 'Yes Chloro Sedai, of course! It must be frustrating knowing this. '
You say 'Yes, thank you!'
Chloro says 'This answer may change over time, but which Ajah interested you
most hearing the histories?"'
You say 'Oh that is not an easy answer!!'
You say 'I certainly leaned quite a bit about Trollocs from Kiruna sedai!'
You say 'I had no idea there were main band of Trollocs, I'd thought them
all the same. '
You say 'but you know...they are often related as dumb beasts!'
You say 'yet at the same time, the lessons talked about how they organzie,
and' and how some are considered protectors, some track, they can count
horses by smell, some set traps, and some were described as sneaky. '
You say 'one the one hand, I dont believe there could ever be peace with
them. but I wonder if its quite right to think of them as absolute animals. '
You say 'I know of no truly dumb beast that can count!'
Chloro says 'Trollocs, per some faded texts were developed by a forsaken to
fight for the shadow during the war of the power. '
You say 'She also has some brief information on battle weaves.I was
interested to see that Flame Strike is well regarded, I have already spent a great
deal of time practising this one. '
Chloro says 'They are the shadow given living form, along with fades,
Drak'ghar, and Greymen.'
You say 'They are terrible, indeed. And must not be allowed to live for the
destruction they bring. Though you know, I do hope they are mindless enough not to
suffer. I've heard that without a Myhddrall at their backs, they'd flee like
scattered goats.'
Chloro says 'For the most part that is true.'
Chloro says 'However, it is time you return to your studies before Sheriam
Sedai comes knocking. You are dismissed novice, but know, I will be watching your
progress.'
You say 'Thank you Chloro Sedai.'
You say 'I've heard from Maddy Sedai that I may be able help outside the
tower. '
You say 'please call for me if so. '
Chloro says 'I will novice.'
You say 'I am.. well I feel I've completed most tasks I can for the moment,
and well, one can only kill so many trees...'
You say 'Thank you!'
