Novice Lyla

Post by Lyla » Mon May 06, 2024 1:06 pm

Summary: Accepted Melosa invites Lyla, a new Novice, to join her in the Mistress of Novices' study and share her reasons for coming to the White Tower. Accepted Maddy has a bit of free time between classes, and is also interested in speaking to the new novice, so she joins them. Accepted Amarea joins the conversation toward the end, and adds a few thoughts about life at the Tower and potential areas of study.

(OOC: This happened several weeks ago, but I didn't have forum access at the time, and was out of the country for a few weeks shortly after. Sorry for the delay!)

Point of view: Lyla
Main character: Melosa
Main character: Maddy
Participant: Amarea

The Mistress of Novices' Study
This is a compact, dark-paneled room full of plain sturdy furnishings that
have been used by generations of women who have held this office. The desk
near the center of the room is plainly made and heavily worn through years
of use. A large mirror with flaking gilt hangs from one of the walls. Used
for switching disobedient initiates, as well as Aes Sedai who do penance, a
bench-like contraption that has a padded leather cushion to kneel on, as
well as a padded leather area to lean on. A selection of switches, ranging
from a slender willow switch to a slipper lie on a table nearby.

A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Melosa Beshar, Accepted & Apprentice to the Green Ajah is standing here.
Maddy Mantear, Journey Accepted is standing here.
Sheriam the Mistress of Novices studies you with a stern expression.

Melosa says 'I always enjoy speaking to the newer initiates in the Tower'
Melosa says 'To hear more about their stories'

Maddy says 'Yes me as well'

Melosa says 'Since Maddy and I had some time between classes, we thought to speak to you'
Melosa smiles happily.
Melosa closes the woodendoor.
Melosa says 'Could you tell us more about yourself and how you came to join the Tower?'

Maddy says 'I hope you are feeling a bit better adding more to your diet than Elk.'

Lyla grins.
Lyla says 'Much better.'
Lyla says 'As for how I came here, it started the day of my sister's wedding.'

Maddy smiles warmly at Lyla.
Melosa laughs.

Lyla says 'She'd run us all around like mules to make sure everything was perfect.'
Lyla says 'And the day of the wedding, I found myself thinking how hilarious it would be if it started
raining.'

Melosa frowns.

Lyla says 'Next thing I knew, an absolute nightmare of a storm blew in. I felt like I could hear every
individual raindrop hitting the window.'
Lyla says 'I didn't realize I'd channeled, but my aunt Chirelle had enough of the spark to realize
what I'd done.'
Lyla's cheeks are burning.

Melosa murmurs, 'A wilder then...'

Maddy frowns as she takes out her notebook to jot some notes down.

Melosa prompts, 'And this was... how long ago?'

Lyla says 'Oh, a few months. It took a while to get here from Altara.'
Lyla says 'And I didn't exactly walk in a straight line...'

Melosa nods in agreement.

Maddy puts down her pen and notepad as she devotes her attention to Lyla once more.

Melosa says 'And so how did you come to the realization that it was you channeling?'
Melosa says 'After all, there are many reasons for a storm'
Melosa chuckles politely.

Maddy nods at Lyla.

Lyla says 'That's how I found out my aunt could channel. Only a small amount, not enough to do much of
anything. She said she could see the glow on me.'

Maddy nods her head slightly as she continues to pay attention to Lyla's words.

Melosa's eyebrows furrow in thought.
Melosa says 'And... is your da alive?'

Lyla says 'He is. Why do you ask?'

Melosa whispers something to Maddy.
Maddy nods at Melosa.

Melosa says 'Simply curious'
Melosa says 'And so you made your way here where you took on the whites.'
Melosa says 'So tell me, why are you here?'

Melosa smiles wryly.

Maddy says 'Is this Aunt your Mother's or Father's sister, or merely an honorary aunt.'

Lyla says 'My mother's sister.'

Maddy nods at Lyla.

Lyla says 'And the way she explained it, there were girls who hurt themselves with the One Power, or
worse. She said the White Tower could teach me to control it, but that once I came here, I couldn't
leave until the Tower was done with me.'

Lyla shrugs.
Lyla says 'Which seems a fair trade.'

Melosa chokes a little while sipping from her cup.
Melosa says 'Your aunt seems to know an awful lot more about the One Power. Was she ever in the
Tower?'

Lyla shakes her head.

Maddy glances to see if Sheriam Sedai is listening.

Lyla says 'She was a Hunter for the Horn when she was younger.'
Lyla says 'So she's traveled a fair bit.'

Melosa says 'Ah, fascinating.'
Melosa says 'Anywho.'
Melosa says 'As I was saying, WHY are you here?'

Lyla thinks really hard.
Lyla says 'I guess... to figure out which kind I am.'
Lyla says 'Whether I'm the kind of girl who learns enough to keep from hurting myself, or if I have
what it takes to earn the shawl.'

Melosa nods in agreement.

Maddy swishes her hair from he face as she adjusts her bag on her shoulder before looking at Lyla
once again.

Melosa says 'Maddy, you had something to ask?'

Maddy smiles at Lyla.
Maddy says 'No, I am good listening for now.'

Melosa nods in agreement.

The woodendoor is opened from the other side.

Amarea has arrived from the east.
Amarea closes the woodendoor.

Amarea beams a broad smile from ear to ear.
Maddy greets Amarea with a light kiss on her cheek.

Melosa says 'For now, Lyla, that is most reasonable'
Melosa beams a smile at Amarea.

Maddy says 'Hello Amarea'

Amarea says 'Hello, everyone. How are you all doing tonight?'

Amarea Helsen the Tower Accepted is standing here.
Melosa Beshar, Accepted & Apprentice to the Green Ajah is standing here.
Maddy Mantear, Journey Accepted is standing here.
Sheriam the Mistress of Novices studies you with a stern expression.

Maddy says 'Very well and yourself?'

Amarea says 'I am doing well! I've been collecting some herbs to mix a few herbal remedies to make
up for the ones I lost the other night.'

Melosa says 'I myself took some time and... failures to understand what I wanted to achieve in the
Tower'
Melosa says 'Is there anything in particular you would like to learn?'

Lyla says 'Failures? But you seem so... competent.'

Melosa looks at the various Accepteds in the room.

Amarea hugs Melosa.

Melosa says 'We are all... looking for class inspirations I suppose'
Melosa chuckles politely.

Maddy says 'Oh goodness Amarea, please send me a list of what you lost and I will keep an eye out
for it.'

Lyla says 'Ah, hmm.'

Melosa says 'On failings'
Melosa says 'My da had a saying'

Amarea says 'Oh, I typically carry two of every common type of herbal potion. But a fist of Trollocs
left me for dead and stripped me of all my equipment.'

Maddy says 'Lyla, have you met with Master Coulin yet for some training?'
Lyla nods at her.

Maddy gets a cup of thready brown tea from an embroidered, cotton shoulder bag.
Maddy gives a cup of thready brown tea to Amarea.

Amarea chuckles politely.

Melosa says 'A rather rude one which I perhaps shall not mention in front of Sheriam Sedai'
Melosa coughs loudly.

Lyla grins evilly.

Amarea says 'It's alright, Maddy. You are generous, but I've already mixed a number of them
tonight.'
Amarea gives a cup of thready brown tea to Maddy.

Melosa says 'He liked to say that success was like getting pregnant'
Melosa coughs loudly.

Amarea blinks her eyes innocently.

Lyla falls down laughing.

Melosa says 'Now, do you have any questions for us?'

Maddy eyes widen in shock at Melosas's words.

Melosa looks at Maddy archly.

Lyla says 'Actually, there was one thing I was wondering about.'
Lyla says 'I've seen people make lights and food with the One Power. And fill water skins, and do all
other sorts of convenient things.'
Lyla says 'To me, it makes sense to just carry an extra lantern and a water skin.'

Amarea nods in agreement.

Melosa chuckles politely.

Maddy nods at Lyla.

Amarea says 'Well, there are conveniences to not needing to carry all of those things.'

Lyla senses Amarea connecting to the True Source.
Lyla senses Amarea is channeling saidar.

Lyla says 'But wouldn't that take time away from studying things like... I don't know, launching
fireballs at trollocs?'

Maddy says 'Amarea, Melosa, Lyla, its been wondeful chatting but I need to run to a class. I will
catch up later.'

Amarea nods at Maddy.

Lyla smiles at her.
Lyla waves.

Maddy opens the woodendoor.
Maddy leaves east.
The woodendoor closes quietly.

Amarea says 'Lyla, the more you advance in the standings in the White Tower, the easier you will
find it to learn various weaves. And the more autonomy you will have in what you want to focus your
studies on.'

Melosa says 'There is some merit to having those weaves'
Melosa says 'Chiefly, the ability to stay light'

Amarea says 'We only have so much of our minds to offer to dedicate to learning certain things. The
more you specialize in certain weaves, the harder it might be to study others. Some people enjoy
those weaves because they mean you will always be prepared, or so you can provide food or sustenance
for other companions. And others might forego studying them so they can specialize in other weaves.'

Amarea nods to herself, she must need reassurance.
Amarea nods at Melosa.

Melosa says 'One must decide which is more important to you'
Melosa says 'Making Trollocs burst into flames or water'
Melosa coughs loudly.

Lyla grins evilly.

Melosa says 'I myself prefer the former. That said, I do have experience in composing light balls'

Amarea adds, 'It also might depend on the Talents you have, and which affinities you possess. I can
barely weave enough Fire to light a candle, so even Flame Strike is beyond me. But I have the Talent
for Earth Singing, and a Talent in the Locate and Travel weaves.'

Melosa says 'As for water, I carry a mug'
Melosa says 'And as the rest has rightfully pointed out, it is a compromise that one must make'
Melosa says 'After all. one can only memorise so many weaves'

Amarea nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'A hundred weaves for the test for the Shawl.'

Lyla coughs loudly.
Lyla says 'A hundred!'

Melosa says 'Only the Light knows how some Aes Sedai can do more than that'

Lyla says 'I barely know three or four...'

Melosa says 'Even the Amrylin was once a novice.'

Amarea beams a smile at Melosa.

Melosa says 'Well then, if there are no further questions, I do have an assignment for you'

Lyla says 'What is it, Accepted?'

Melosa says 'Let any of us know if you have any subjects you like us to cover. I myself conduct a
basic self-defense class'
Melosa says 'From time to time'
Melosa says 'And Amarea does... criminal work'

Melosa coughs loudly.

Amarea falls down laughing.

Lyla boggles at that.

Melosa says 'I meant to say'
Melosa says 'Work on criminals'
Melosa thinks hard.

Melosa says 'Amarea, explain yourself.'
Melosa coughs loudly.
Melosa says 'I might have taken a blow to the head recently near Fal Moran'

Amarea says 'I have been working on a comprehensive field research project to hunt down criminals
and bring them to justice, and catalog their traits and locations.'
Amarea says 'As a result, I know a good deal about most of these enemies, strategies to fight them,
equipment they carry, and so on.'

Lyla says 'Oh, that's interesting.'

Amarea says 'As a Brown Ajah apprentice, I also am glad to teach you more in basics of weave
selection, history of the known world, and a variety of useful ways to explore the world.'
Amarea says 'But I unfortunately must retire for a while now, but I might be awake in an hour or two
if you are still up.'

Melosa says 'Well'

Lyla nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'It is almost Prime and time for lunch'

Amarea smiles happily.
Amarea waves.
Lyla waves goodbye to Amarea.

Melosa says 'I do believe we are done here'

Amarea says 'The Light favor you, and keep you safe.'

Melosa says 'Thank you, girls.'

Amarea opens the woodendoor.
Amarea leaves east.
The woodendoor closes quietly.

Melosa smiles at Lyla.

Lyla says 'Thanks for taking the time to speak with me. I'll let you know if I have any ideas for
classes.'

Melosa nods in agreement.
Lyla smiles at her.

Melosa says 'Always a pleasure'

Melosa opens the woodendoor.

Melosa waves.
Lyla waves.
