Back to Basics

Post by Skyra » Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:54 pm

Summary:
While conversing with Accepted Melosa and talking about weaves and uses Accepted Melosa she thought it best to go ahead and organize a class. She then reached to Novice Maddy who was able to join the class on short notice. Accepted Melosa then shared her experiences on basic weaving and usage. Personally, this class was very informative and offered some good insight. I also want to thank Accepted Melosa for walking us through some basic information that gets overlooked sometimes.

POV: Skyra
Main characters: Melosa, Maddy, Skyra

______________________________

Melosa closes the door.

Maddy moves to a desk at the front of the room sliding in gracefully

Melosa says 'As I was saying, I had the chance to briefly discuss today's class topic with Sarinda
Sedai'

You emote: Skyra gently pulls a chair out and sits down.

Melosa says 'Today will be less on practical but more on theory'

Melosa says 'One of the sisters may follow up with a more practical exercise'

Melosa says 'So today's topic will be on the choice and use of weaves in battle, both against
Shadowspawn and wielders of the One Power.'

Melosa's face tightens as she mentions male channelers.

Maddy rustles around in the pack pulling out a notepad and pen

Melosa says 'Now then, can any one tell me? What are the different weaves available to us
initiates?'

You emote: Skyra whispers to Maddy asking if she has extra paper.

Your cheeks are burning.

Maddy rips a page out of her book passing it to Skyra

Melosa claps her hands together sharply, "GIRLS!"

You say 'With regards to available weaves.'

Maddy says 'I am learning the Fire and Air weaves and i already know ice spikes and blind well '

Melosa says 'One at a time please.'

You say 'I am not 100% sure but I think Gate is off limits to us.'

Melosa says 'What does the Handbook say?'

Melosa nods at you.

Melosa says 'Very good. What else?'

Maddy says 'I havent brought my handbook today but I would imagine incinerate would be one we should
not play with'

Melosa nods at Maddy.

Melosa says 'Indeed'

You say 'We cannot use Compulsion or Shield I believe'

Melosa says 'Excellent.'

Melosa says 'And some one tell me, why do you think that is the case?'

Melosa says 'That these weaves are forbidden'

You emote: Skyra raises hand slowly.

Melosa points at you.

Melosa says 'Yes, Skyra?'

You say 'Well not completely sure but incinerate is a very dangerous weave. And compulsion is a
weave that i dont think can be used without breaking the three oaths. Of the other two I am not sure.'

Melosa taps her lower lip thoughtfully and says, "Yes you are correct in part."

Maddy whispers "Balefire"

Melosa says 'Some weaves are simply too dangerous for untrained wielders of the One Power.
Incinerate, Gate and Shield being such weaves. Others by their very nature, violates the Three
Oaths'

Melosa says 'Remember, you are to live by the Three Oaths as if you have already sworn upon the Oath
Rod'

Melosa says 'Otherwise, a penance is the very least of your worries.'

Melosa says 'Let us move on.'

Melosa says 'Yes'

Melosa says 'So with the exception of these forbidden weaves, you are free to train in weaves that
most suit yourself in battle.'

Melosa says 'And this is one that develops over time and experience.'

Melosa says 'Can some one name some weaves that are commonly described to take more time to weave?'

Melosa strides up and down the side of the classroom, waiting for an answer.

Maddy says 'I have noticed that Ice Spikes take longer than Flame Strike'

Melosa says 'Yes, good. What else?'

Melosa says 'Weaves in battle, mind you'

You say 'I believe Fireball has a longer than normal time.'

Maddy taps the pen on her chin frowing her brows as she trys to remember the short weaves vs the
long weaves

Melosa says 'And one more?'

You say 'While not positive I believe Hurricane and maybe Lighting takes a long time to weave.'

Melosa says 'Hurricane, I will accept'

Melosa says 'Sonic Boom was the answer I was looking for'

You nod at her.

Melosa says 'Now, any other quick weaves which was not mentioned?'

You emote: Skyra takes a moment to write a note.

Melosa says 'Weaves used in combat'

You emote: Skyra looks to Maddy.

Melosa leans on the dais, waiting for an answer.

Maddy says 'what about chill'

Melosa says 'Yes, Chill. Good.'

Maddy says 'and there are battle support weaves like armor and strength'

Melosa says 'There is one more'

Melosa looks at Maddy.

You say 'How about Blind and Fear?'

Maddy says 'also create food and water are very quick support for battle weaves'

Melosa says 'Yes Blind, Fear and Contagion are all oft used'

Melosa says 'But a common weave in battle, especially against channelers, is Slice'

Maddy says 'ah yes Sarinda Sedai mentioned that in her class'

You emote: Skyra raises her hand slowly.

Melosa says 'Yes skyra'

You say 'When practicing different weaves like we have talked about. How much effort should we be
putting into each one?'

Melosa replies slyly, "Full effort of course"

You nod at her.

Melosa says 'Another excellent question'

Melosa says 'I will share my own experience and that of others may differ'

Maddy quickly jots the list of shortweaes in her notes

Melosa says 'Personally, for crucial battle weaves such as Fireball and Ice Spikes, I tend to put in
full effort'

Melosa says 'For myself personally, I am'

Melosa says 'Focused on disabling enemy channelers'

Melosa says 'And so I have close to full effort in Slice, Flamestrike and Earthquake'

Melosa says 'I would also like to very much caution you on the use of Earthquake'

You say 'Each of those are considered interrupter type weaves?'

Melosa says 'Do not, and I repeat, do not use Earthquake unless in the most dire of circumstances'

Melosa says 'I would encourage you to seek approval from an Aes Sedai before even contemplating the
use of that weave in battle.'

Maddy says 'Is it true if you are going to use blind it must be well practiced'

Melosa says 'But there are situations where it is helpful'

Melosa says 'Maddy, I will come to your question in a bit'

Melosa says 'And finally on other weaves like Warding vs Damage or Locate or Refresh, I personally
have put in high effort'

Melosa says 'Weaves that tend to last longer like Armor, Strength, Create Food, I tend to practise
them less'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'That makes sense its not as critical if you fail one of those weaves.'

Melosa nods at you.

Melosa says 'Indeed'

Melosa says 'Because you do have time'

Melosa says 'Now to Maddy's question on infliction weaves'

Melosa says 'I personally find that high effort is worthwhile for those'

Melosa says 'Again, the use of such weaves in battle is long debated. Some Aes Sedai value its usefulness. Others say it is simply better to burn Trollocs to dust'

Melosa says 'I, for one, am more for the latter.'

Maddy nods at Melosa before turning back to her notes

Melosa says 'Now question'

Melosa says 'How much effort would you put into Call Lightning and why, why not?'

Melosa says 'This is an open discussion.'

Maddy says 'I would not put much in as you may have to change the weather'

You say 'Not sure I agree.'

Melosa chuckles slightly as the novices begin to argue amongst themselves.

Maddy nods at Skyra waiting to learn the reasoning

Melosa says 'Skyra, please continue.'

You say 'I think you should really put as much effort as you can. You do not want to fail that
weave.'

You say 'Weather can change and be changed you need to be ready.'

Melosa says 'Allow me to share my perspective'

Melosa says 'Before I joined the Tower, I was a bit of an adventurer. I even explored Fal Dara several times and there were occasions where I came across Trollocs. With that background, I personally find the use of Call Lightning extremely
restrictive.'

Melosa says 'As Sarinda Sedai has pointed out, the weather has shifted'

Melosa says 'It is no longer as straightforward to change the weather to that suitable for lightning
conditions'

Melosa says 'Furthermore, it requires both expertise in Change Weather and the weave itself.'

Melosa says 'And finally, the yowling of Trollocs when lightning appears personally annoys me.'

Maddy snickers softly.

Melosa says 'I would like to set you both a task'

Melosa says 'Read Sarinda Sedai's seminal reseearch on the weather. The weather has changed since then, But that provides a strong foundation for understanding the weather'

Maddy writes the task in her notes

Melosa says 'We shall regroup in the future for a discussion on that'

You nod at her.

Melosa says 'I believe you would be able to find it in the Fifth Depository'

Maddy says 'I look forward to that and reading Sarinda Sedai's research'

Melosa says 'Ask the Librarians if you do not'

Melosa says 'I would encourage you to think about your own set of weaves'

Melosa says 'That you believe will help you in battle. Think about your own experiences and whom you expect to encounter in your travels'

Melosa says 'A Brown aspirant perhaps need less practice in Flame strike.'

Melosa says 'And one keen to learn from the Yellows would have practiced Healing and Cure Poison'

Melosa says 'Fortunately, you are young and can easily retrain yourselves.

You emote: Skyra thinks that may be in her near future.

Melosa says 'So, assignments!'

Melosa says 'The first is to read Sarinda Sedai's work on the weather'

Melosa says 'The second to think about your own weaves'

You emote: Skyra looks at Maddy and mouths questionably 'homework'?

Maddy grins at you.

Maddy whipers to Skyra "We can work together"

You nod at her.

Melosa says 'Are there any questions for me before we conclude today's class?'

Maddy says 'No thank you very much it was informative and has given me alot to ponder and clear
directton for additinal self learning'

Melosa says 'Well, girls, since there are no further questions, class is dismissed.'

Melosa opens the door.

Melosa says 'I will speak to Sarinda Sedai regarding a practical exercise the next time we meet.'
