Margeret and Sarinda
An interview for worthiness for promotion.

Sarinda says 'Margeret.'
Margeret curtseys to her audience.
Vistra curtseys before Sarinda.
Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, fetch some plates of food for both of us, and meet
me in the Red Ajah's den.'

Sarinda says 'One should suffice for me.'

Margeret says 'Yes Aes Sedai'

The Pantry
The room has somehow been made to be as cool as a springhouse in order to
keep the food fresh. Sacks of different varieties of flour and seasonings
are stacked against one of the walls. A shelf placed against a second wall
holds jars of preserved fruits and cartons of eggs, and barrels of wines
from different countries fill the rest of the room. A thick wooden door
with a small barred window lies on the east wall, overlooking a graveled
stretch of the garden, allowing supplies to be brought in with ease.

make dinner

Margeret open the pantry and prepare the ingredients for a dinner.

Margeret begins preparing the dish.

The smell of cookery fills the area.

Margeret finish making the dish.

prepare wine

Margeret prepare a goblet, filling it from a nearby barrel.

prepare punch

prepare tea

Margeret prepare a steaming cup of tea.

Den of the Red Ajah
This room reflects the cool nature of the Red Ajah, the furnishings just as
severe as the rest of the room. A gilded chair rests near the center of the
room, accompanied by an equally elaborate dark wooden desk. Chairs have
been drawn up to the tall, arched windows, which look over the western side
of Tar Valon, the western bank of the Erinin and Dragonmount beyond,
serving as a constant reminder of the purpose of the Red Ajah.

Door east: door
A chair made of red oak rests next to the table. [2]
A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Lady Sarinda is sitting here on a stout oaken chair, eyeing you critically.
A silver-haired Aes Sedai sits here, reading.
A Red Sister stares down here nose here.
Galina Casban completely ignores you.

Margeret curtseys to her audience.

Sarinda looks up from a small stack of reports to look at you and nods.

Margeret gives a plate of hot stew with some bread to Sarinda.

Margeret senses Sarinda connecting to the True Source.

Margeret says 'I didnt know if you wanted, wine, punch or tea, so i brought all three'

Sarinda gestures and the door slams shut from an unseen force.

Sarinda smiles warmly.

Sarinda says 'Excellent, child. Finally a novice who knows how to follow directions, and
to go beyond them without being told.'

Margeret gives a goblet of Cairhien wine to Sarinda.

Margeret gives a cup of honeyed tea to Sarinda.

Sarinda releases the Source and motions for you to take a seat at the other oaken chair.

the wine will do.'

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Margeret says 'Ah I have mint and cloudberry or honeyed tea. But i will remember the tremalking
for sure Sarinda Sedai. '

Sarinda sniffs the cup of tea, then sets it down with a small shake of her head. 'It is
not a problem. The wine is a good vintage that I am familiar with.'

Sarinda sets the food down on the desk and out of her way, so she can study you more carefully.

Sarinda puts a cup of honeyed tea in a desk.
Sarinda puts a goblet of Cairhien wine in a desk.
Sarinda puts a plate of hot stew with some bread in a desk.

Sarinda says 'It has been approximately a week and a half since I inducted you into the
White Tower, child. Tell me, what have you been learning since your time here?'

Sarinda looks at Margeret.

Margeret says 'I went over histories, the war of the second dragon with Chloro Sedai, the
lessens from the sisters in the wings, lots and lots of dishes and plates of food for the barrel in
the courtyard, all the tasks that Sheriam Sedai asked me to do, some of them multiple times. The
three oaths, putting books away in the library. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Margeret emote: Margeret ponders a moments and continues.

Sarinda gets a goblet of Cairhien wine from a desk.

Sarinda sips the goblet of wine as she listens intently.

Sarinda sips from the goblet

Margeret says 'then the one power, I will have to reprac, i made a pretty impractical choice
because I was curious and well... maybe we shouldn't talk about that just yet. '

Sarinda chuckles politely.

Sarinda says 'Many new novices find that when they first study with Sheriam, there is a
temptation to study the most complicated weaves, a desperate desire to learn and demonstrate that
knowledge. But you must learn how to crawl before you can walk, and to walk before you can run, if
it pleases the Light.'

Sarinda says 'For now, I recommend the basics. The Armor weave will help you avoid being
hit. An offensive weave to kill ravens and crows, or defend yourself from threats if need be. Basics
in Healing are incredibly useful even to visitors passing through the city.'

Margeret says 'To be honest, I already reprac'd once. I had alot of the basic weaves, but i
wanted to try some of the more complex, which not being allowed off the island makes that
impractical for now. especially since a misport could put me in illian. '

Margeret's cheeks are burning.

Sarinda says 'Ah. Another one trying to Travel.'

Sarinda says 'Illian? That sounds like a rather specific example when worded that way, child.'

Sarinda's ageless face is stoic.

Margeret nods at her.

Sarinda remains silent, sipping her goblet, staring at you intently as if waiting for
further explanation.

Margeret says 'I never 'left' the island, well not intentionally. I haven't told any other Aes
Sedai, I was worried about whether they would believe me. '

Sarinda says 'You Traveled to Illian? And rode back here?'

Margeret says 'Yes Aes Sedai, but i wasn't my intention, I was trying to travel from the novice
quarters to the courtyard, I had the earthcode from locate life and locating another novice. BUT..
it did not work. '

Sarinda nods slowly.

Sarinda says 'Tell me, why did you Travel to the wrong location?'

Sarinda says 'Or, in other words, what was your specific error that allowed this to happen?'

Margeret says 'because my low skill, getting the power of the elements, I didnt have enough
practices to become proficient with the weaves, locate life, locate object, travel or gate. '

Sarinda says 'What percent training do you have in the Locate Object, Locate Life, and
Travel weaves?'

Margeret says 'I can't say specific percentages unless i visit Sheriam agian, but poor, poor,
poor and bad. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Margeret emote: Margeret nervously smiles.

Sarinda says 'In this case, the exact percentages may matter.'

Sarinda clambers to her feet.

Margeret senses Sarinda connecting to the True Source.

Sarinda gestures with her hand.

Sarinda beckons Margeret to follow her.

The door smoothly swings open.

Margeret now follows Sarinda.

The Mistress of Novices' Study
This is a compact, dark-paneled room full of plain sturdy furnishings that
have been used by generations of women who have held this office. The desk
near the center of the room is plainly made and heavily worn through years
of use. A large mirror with flaking gilt hangs from one of the walls. Used
for switching disobedient initiates, as well as Aes Sedai who do penance, a
bench-like contraption that has a padded leather cushion to kneel on, as
well as a padded leather area to lean on. A selection of switches, ranging
from a slender willow switch to a slipper lie on a table nearby.
[ obvious exits: E ]
Zone: White Tower Upper Floors
Door east: woodendoor
A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Lady Sarinda din Rovan is standing here.
A young girl in a plain white dress stands here.
Sheriam the Mistress of Novices studies you with a stern expression.

Sarinda closes the woodendoor.

Sarinda says 'Well? What do you see?'

Margeret says 'LL 38, LO 40%, Travel 28%, Gate 11% and Hammer of Air 44% and that is all the
weaves i currently know. BUT I have 7 earth, 4 air, 2 fire, 5 water and 4 sprit.'

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'So you are strong in the elements, especially Earth and Spirit, but still
requiring more training in some key basic weaves.'

Sarinda says 'You are at a time in your training that even a little worldly experience
(level) will afford you a great number of practice sessions with Sheriam.'

Margeret says 'I recently learned how useful blind, refresh and healing weaves are. When i
reprac I plan to diversify.

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda closes the woodendoor.

Sarinda gets a plate of yellow peppers and pork from a backpack.

Sarinda eats a plate of yellow peppers and pork.

Margeret curtseys before her.

Sarinda says 'Ah, there. It seems the daily ripple in the Pattern came early.'

Sarinda draws down her thin eyebrows into a frown.

Margeret says 'They daily ripple, that is very good way of explaining it. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'The Father of Storms sometimes touches the world and causes it to...ripple.
An unpleasant experience that distorts time and awareness.'

Sarinda says 'A reminder of the times of why the White Tower and our Aes Sedai are needed.'

Sarinda nods decisively.

Margeret smiles at her.

Sarinda says 'So, going back to your comments about Travel. Why do you think you
specifically mis-Traveled? Do you understand the nuances of it?'

Sarinda says 'You hinted at a part of a truth that relates to the answer.'

Margeret says 'i am pretty sure I had the earthcode correct, but the % of the weaves determines
accuracy of that code, I think, and the travel weave itself being not all the proficient has the
potential to be off, most of the time, recently I have just been trying the even lower percent gate
wave to tell me earth codes and when it is successful, trying the gate to them and examining it. '

Margeret says 'oh and range of the travel or gate weave. '

Margeret says 'and the locate life, object weaves, I believe I read in the library you want you
locates weaves lower then your travel or gate weave, that way you do not locate something out of
range. '

Sarinda's face is Aes Sedai stillness, but her eyes narrow slightly.

Sarinda says 'Sheriam Sedai will allow you to study the Travel weave, though to be honest,
I strongly advise against it until you are a full Accepted. You have little reason to use it, as you
cannot leave the island. It has led to far too many girls ending in a dangerous situation. You could
have just as easily ended in the Blight rather than Illian.'

Margeret nods at her.

Sarinda says 'But by the Tower Handbook and decree of the Hall, you must never attempt to
use the Gate weave. The proper study of that weave is limited to Aes Sedai alone.'

Sarinda says 'The Travel and Gate weaves are similar enough, true, that you will find some
modest residual training in Gate even though Sheriam will not let you study the Gate weave. But
weaving Gate can be incredibly dangerous.'

Margeret says 'I completely understand, and thats why i have not tried the travel weave since,
and well, i did get the residual training in the gate weave, thats why its so low.'

prac gate

Sheriam the Mistress of Novices says 'You're not able to learn that weave at this time, Margeret.'
Ouch!

Margeret's cheeks are burning.

Sarinda says 'Most importantly, if you remain embracing the Source while keeping a gateway
open, or even if you release the Source but then embrace again within the hour (tick), every person
moving through that gate will sap your energy in saidar. There is a possibility that it could burn
you out of the ability to weave the One Power, permanently.'

Sarinda nods decisively.

Sarinda says 'Now, be honest with me to make sure I am understanding. Did you, or did you
not, intentionally attempt to use the Gate weave? Not Travel, but the actual Gate weave?'

Margeret says 'I might have exaggerated, i tried travel the once and never again, and the gate
weave, I did try it, but have only been successful once and it said that I could not learn the
earthcode. Thats why i said i need to reprac sadly. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'What is the First Oath, Margeret?'

Sarinda says 'Word for word.'

Margeret says 'To speak no word that is not true.'

Sarinda nods decisively.

Sarinda says 'Well spoken.'

Sarinda says 'Now, you are not Aes Sedai and have never spoken on the Oath Road, a
ter'angreal that makes the Oaths supernaturally binding. But as a novice you are expected to live by
the Three Oaths as if you had already sworn them.'

Sarinda sighs and explains in a softer voice, 'Margeret, you are trying to sprint before
you can crawl, let alone run. Because you have been honest with me, I will lessen your punishment,
and still allow you a chance to prove yourself for the advancement I know you seek. But if it
pleases the Light, I -must- impress upon you the gravity of this situation.'

Margeret says 'and I have not, when asked instead of dancing around it, as I could have. I came
right out. I understand at times that Aes Sedai, might dance around it a little such as saying to
"You can call me such and such name." instead of "My name is."'>

Sarinda smiles knowingly.

Sarinda says 'Well spoken, child.'

Sarinda whispers to you, 'Use the command 'request penance' one time here in this room.
Don't say it aloud, just type those two words and hit enter.'

Sarinda looks to Sheriam and gives a hint of a single nod.

request penance

Sheriam the Mistress of Novices stands and chooses a willow switch.

Sheriam the Mistress of Novices walks over to you.

Sheriam the Mistress of Novices lifts her hand and brings down the switch.
Ouch!

Sarinda's ageless face is stoic.

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda thanks Sheriam the Mistress of Novices heartily.

Sarinda claps her hands suddenly and stands. 'A bit of Mortification of the Flesh is
important for making certain lessons stick, and the loss of a merit (1 QP) from this penance will
hopefully make that lesson stick as well.'

Sarinda says 'Come with me. I have something to show you.'

Sarinda opens the woodendoor.

Margeret follows Sarinda.

Sarinda leaves north. ^^
Margeret follows Sarinda.

Center of the Eighth Depository
A long, oval chamber stretches to the north and south, crowned by a
flat-domed ceiling. Between the entrance in the western wall and the
bookcases lining the eastern wall lies a veritable maze of bookcases, each
containing books of various ages and in various conditions, each authored
by Aes Sedai, and concerning the study, practice, and utilization of the
One Power. Glass cased lanterns illuminate the room, their enclosed flames
surely a means to reduce the risk of fire among this priceless collection.

Lady Sarinda din Rovan is standing here.
A frail woman tends the library, dusting shelves as she goes.

Sarinda escorts you briskly to the Eighth Depository, walking more slowly as she arrives
at a set of shelves. She taps her lip, then finds a dusty volume and hands it to you
(viewtopic.php?f=104&t=16703).

Sarinda says 'Here we go. This is the transcript from a lesson taught by Penzei, Accepted
at the time but now Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah. This lesson is on the use of the Locate Life and
Locate Object weaves, and their intersection with and utility for the Travel weave.'

Sarinda's lips curve into the barest hint of a smile as she continues, 'You are not the
first novice to experience this problem. I hope that you will find this lesson enlightening.'

Margeret says 'Sarinda Sedai, I might not reprac, I know I will struggle a little until i gain
more knowledge(levels) so that I can actually learn and use weaves. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'What you study is your choice, and at Sheriam's discretion, child.'

Sarinda says 'It is how you -use- those weaves that is the purview of not only the Aes
Sedai of the White Tower, but especially the Red Ajah, given our role in protecting the world from
another Breaking due to misuse of the One Power.'

Sarinda says 'Let us return to the Red Ajah quarters and finish our discussion.'

Sarinda leaves west. <<
Margeret follows Sarinda.

Galina Casban completely ignores you.

Margeret senses Sarinda connecting to the True Source.

Sarinda gestures and the door slams shut from an unseen force.

Sarinda sits down on a stout oaken chair.

Sarinda nods at the other chair.

Margeret says 'My lesson with Chloro Sedai was quite informative, I had the book on the war of
the second dragon to put away and that became part of our lesson, then we spoke of the ajahs and
their purposes. In general, and in war. I was surprised when she said the Red Ajah was not just to
protect from men, but all channelers. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'Obviously, the Ajah formed around the time of the Breaking and with the
critical goal then of preventing future harm to the world by finding and gentling the remaining male
Aes Sedai who were jeopardizing the safety of the world, of the very Pattern itself, due to the
taint they received when Lews Therin Telamon led his sortie against the Father of Storms at the
Bore.'

Sarinda says 'But over the past two millennia, our purpose has expanded to include the
safeguard of humanity against any channeler who might wield the Power indiscriminately or
dangerously, abusing it. Those with the ability to weave the One Power are perhaps the most
dangerous of all people in this world.'

Margeret nods at her.

Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, Margeret, why do you believe you are ready for advancement?'

Margeret says 'Well Sarinda Sedai, I have been studying. I have been working, and very hard. I
understand I won't be joining you as a sister Aes Sedai for quite sometime. But I am trying very
hard, the limitations of the island feel stifling, before coming here I would travel the world on a
whim. I am not sure I went over the whole apprentice gleeman to my uncle with your or Chloro. I sold
my cloak and am commited fully.'

Sarinda says 'You discussed it with Chloro at more length than you did with me.'

Margeret says 'pardon, Chloro Sedai. '

Margeret's cheeks are burning.

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'The restrictions on traveling to remain on the island of Tar Valon are for
your safety, child, and to also ensure that only those initiates who are truly dedicated to our
cause and ready to represent the White Tower abroad are able to earn that rank.'

Sarinda says 'You will find that if you rush into the banded dress that you could burn
out, in more way than one, ending your career with us early.'

Sarinda draws down her thin eyebrows into a frown.

Sarinda says 'What do you think it means to even be a 'wearied novice', child? How do you
think your life might change, if I promote you?'

Margeret says 'and I do understand that as well Sarinda Sedai. I was following another, she was
helping me with a few things and panicked when we went through one of the gates, not across the
bridges, we were still on the island. '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'Yes, you can pass east and southeast from the city into the small village
and woods outside the city. That is still the island.'

Margeret says 'Honestly, Sarinda Sedai, being promoted to weary novice will not change anything,
unless there are some fledglings that I can help, but i would and do do that anyways. The only thing
that will change is it is a step in the right direction. '

Sarinda says 'It sounds like these "close calls" have done their job at impressing upon
you the potential dangers that are all around you. You swim with a school of silverpike beneath you,
but at least now it seems that you are more aware of the risks.'

Sarinda pauses, thinking.

Sarinda says 'Sister, let us recognise novice Margeret.'

Galina Casban says 'It is done.'

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'It is done, child. I bestow the title of a wearied novice upon you.'

Sarinda says 'Narrowly.'

Sarinda frowns.

Margeret curtseys before her.

Sarinda says 'Although you have exhibited some significant errors in judgement, you have
also shown growth in how you have approached them, and a readiness and deep desire to improve
yourself.'

Margeret says 'Thank you Aes Sedai. It means a lot coming from you. '

halls of the White Tower and earns the title of Wearied Novice.'

Sarinda says 'By the next time we meet for a lesson, child, I expect you to have read the
Tower Handbook as well as that lesson by Penzei Sedai.'

Sarinda says 'And at your convenience, I would like you to write a brief summary of the
lesson and give me a report on at least three things you have learned from it. Send a (forum) mail
to me with your findings. It will be shared with other Aes Sedai, so make sure it reflects on your
skills and knowledge well.'

Sarinda says 'It does not need to be lengthy, but make sure it is accurate.'

Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, do you have any questions for me at this time?'

Margeret says '(I was logging into the forums) I do not Sarinda Sedai. I will continue to work
hard and make sure that I also have more then enough qps to advance when the time comes. '

Sarinda says 'Just remember that merits are only one imperfect way of measuring your
ability to grow and learn. They are necessary, but not sufficient, to allow you to be promoted
further.'

Sarinda says 'Before you are ready for the Arches, I will need to see that you have a
better understanding of Tower laws and customs, a more diverse weave setup, and at least some basic
knowledge of how to defend yourself, both your life as well as your ideas.'

Margeret says 'yes Aes Sedai, I will, I promise that. '

Sarinda says 'You are dismissed, child.'

Sarinda says 'May the Light illumine you, and see you safe to your journey's end.'

Sarinda smiles warmly.

Margeret curtseys before her.

Sarinda says 'And congratulations.'

Margeret says 'The light favor you Sarinda Sedai.'

I have awarded Margaret 1 rpqp and Sarinda 1 qp for this log. See any silver-haired Aes Sedai to 'receive' your reward.
