Odina's Fresh Start

Post by Odina » Sat Sep 17, 2022 6:43 pm

Leaning back against the thick wooden door of her room, Odina Redmund sighed tiredly as it closed behind her, coming to a stop with a satisfying thud. For a time, she slumped against it for support and basked in the relative silence of her room, cut off from the rest of the White Tower. Here in the Novice Quarters the rooms were small and drab, and starkly furnished with what could only be generously described as 'modest' furniture. In truth, she was sure even the servants back home would balk at these accommodations. But her room was quiet and still, and for the moment that was all that mattered.

Unsure how long she stood there gathering her strength, she eventually pushed herself off of the wooden support and, groaning, tiredly made her way across the room. Reaching out to pour the pitcher of water into a wash basin, she stopped short at the sight of her wrinkled fingers, turning her hands over to examine the signs of the days labor. Indignant rage boiled beneath the surface once more at the state of her appearance, damp and disheveled, and with no Aes Sedai to intimidate her, she felt no need to hold it back any longer.

'They've no right!', she thought, not for the first time today. 'Treating me like some common maid or kitchen worker! How dare they!?' Glaring at her unkempt hair and grease smudged face, she furiously reached for a nearby comb and worked it through her hair with more fervor then strictly necessary. It was bad enough that she was made to burn her own dress and don Novice whites the minute after signing her name in that infernal book, 'My dress...!', but this was something quite different. True they had told her there would be chores, but surely she should have been assigned something more becoming of her rank and education. She was daughter of a noble house after all! A minor house, true, but no common farm girl to be mucking about with dirty laundry or greasy pots.

And that woman! Oh that odious woman! 'Mistress of the Kitchens indeed!' If that woman came at her with that spoon again... 'So help me, I'll school her in fighting a Saldaean woman.' The thought of trouncing that self-important simpleton almost made her smile, but the image staring back at her reminded her that she had done nothing of the sort today. Placing the comb back on the side of the basin, she dumped the water from the pitcher into the bowl and set about scrubbing the remains of her time in the pots off of her face. The cold water was bracing, and by the time she had finished her task and could look in the mirror with some semblance of acceptance, her fury had dimmed to a simmer.

Making her way towards the bed, she slipped out of her soiled dress and into a clean slip. Climbing onto the mattress, both somehow firm and lumpy, she grumbled once more. 'Things are going to have to change.', she thought as she pulled the sheets up over her, lowering her freshly combed head onto her pillow. She would speak with Sheriam in the morning. As Mistress of Novices, it was surely her duty to rectify whatever misunderstanding had put her in this position. Odina would not be forced to endure this sort of treatment. She was certain of it. Tomorrow she would make a fresh start.
