To 'assume' makes an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'

Post by Hypatia » Tue Aug 09, 2022 9:25 pm

Context: Sitter Sarinda of the Red Ajah had taken the Fledgeling Novice Hypatia, for a short first sparring session, in which Hypatia had almost fallen on her own spear, tripping over her own feet more often than not…
Returning to Coulin in order to heal, and recuperate, the pair are interrupted in their review of the sparring session, by a rather abrasive individual, named Jael.
Nevertheless, Sarinda Sedai managed to turn the conversation into an excellent lesson on looking beyond the obvious and one’s own assumptions.

Hypatia thinks really hard.

Sarinda says 'So. While we recover our strength in saidar, I find this to be a useful time to debrief.'

Sarinda says 'What did you do well, Hypatia?'

Hypatia says 'I would say that there is little that I did well.'

Sarinda smiles knowingly.

The White Tower is bathed in a reddish orange light as the sun sets.

Jael has arrived from the south.

Sarinda says 'In my experience, I find that women frequently jump to things they could have done better, or thought they did poorly at, when asked how they are doing.'

Hypatia says 'there was one or two occasions, where I realised that I was slow in weaving, so I darted out of range...'

Jael sighs heavily, and places a single black rose at Sarinda's feet

Sarinda looks at Jael archly.

Jael says 'My condolences, Sarinda Sedai'

Sarinda draws down her thin eyebrows into a frown.

Sarinda says 'For what? For taking my horse?'

Sarinda stops resting, and clambers on her feet.

Hypatia says 'good evening good sir.'

Sarinda says 'What about them?'

Sarinda sits down and rests.

Jael frowns.

Sarinda touches her hand to her forehead, lips, and heart in greeting.

Rex bows before Sarinda.

Jael says 'Snipped from the Pattern'

Rex gets a crystal lightstick from a weapon rack.

Jael says 'What glory it is the Creator saw fit to respin them so soon!'

Rex puts a crystal lightstick in a belt pack.

Hypatia ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Jael says 'I was greatly saddened by news of their demise'

Rex gets a small purse from a weapon rack.

Sarinda's voice is bared steel. 'Who killed them? And when?'

Hypatia says 'you share words of sad tidings, yet sound not sad at all.'

Jael frowns.

Rex gets a thin vial of yellow fluid from a small purse.

Jael claps his hands together.

Rex offers the vial to Sarinda Sedai. "Would you have any need of this?"

Jael of Two Rivers is a human.

Sarinda whispers to you, 'Guard your tongue around this man, child, and keep an eye to your back.'

Sarinda shakes her head at Rex.

Sarinda says 'I have no immediate need for it, Rex, but thank you.'

Rex puts a thin vial of yellow fluid in a belt pack.

Sarinda looks at Jael.

Hypatia looks warily to where the warder students move through the forms, edging closer toward Coulin.

the warder students and those warders who are not sharing quarters with

Sarinda says 'Jael, if you have other business or tidings to share, be out with it and leave us, if it pleases the Light.'

Jael says 'I am paying my respects, Sarinda Sedai'

Jael says 'Surely you aren't so heartless as to be dismissive of that'

Jael kneels solemnly on the ground.

Jael bows his head in prayer.

Sarinda whispers to you, 'Look at the man and memorize his appearance.'

Jael remains silent.

Jael continues to be silent.

Hypatia says 'it seems Aes Sedai, that some are so uncouth as to think they can tweak the White Tower without any semblence of honesty or sincerity.'

The White Tower's spire gleams softly in the first light of a new day.

Hypatia says 'I have lived nearby all my life, yet that sight of the first light of dawn on the spires, always catches my breath.'

Jael quietly murmurs under his breath, whispers of "Creator" and "Shelter their soul" escape his lips.

Sarinda looks at Jael archly.

Hypatia drinks the water.

Sarinda whispers to you, 'This one is dangerous, child. Guard your tongue for now.'

Sarinda arches her eyebrow. 'If it pleases the Light, do you seek to wear the novice whites, Jael? Do you have interest in the White Tower's knowledge?'

Jael says 'Oh yes, I have an interest in all knowledge'

Hypatia nods slowly, eyes bright, lips pursed as if in expectation.

Jael sits at the edge of the basin, his legs kicking back and forth.

Jael says 'By all means, don't mind me'

Jael says 'Continue on!'

Sarinda replies dryly, 'If you seek to better understand tactics for weaving the One Power in combat against your foes, Jael, then we have other business together, if it pleases the Light.'

Hypatia tells Sarinda 'I thought of *oL, initially, yet he doesnt appear on view clan for either'

Hypatia says 'his tone, indeed his words were disrespectful... well-chosen, to imply slight it seemed to me.'

Sarinda says 'Indeed.'

Sarinda says 'He was goading us into a conflict of wills.'

Hypatia says 'I always did talk too much for my own good, my mother says, and I have on occasion talked to members of the Children of the Light who would hang around Alindaer.'

Sarinda says 'That man is no Child of the Light, or Questioner.'

Hypatia says 'he spoke of the Creator, and the Creator blessing us, yet in the way that the Questioners tend to imply a blessing, is to cleanse someone from the Wheel entirely.'

Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, what do all Children of Light and Hand of the Light have in common in their attire?'

Hypatia says 'Not a Child? yet he worked to give that impression?'

Hypatia says 'why I guess you are referring to their white cloaks, which give them their name.'

Sarinda nods decisively.

Sarinda says 'Yes, precisely.'

Sarinda says 'And what did this man wear?'

Hypatia nods slowly. "I am foolish... for why would a child hide their white cloak, while wearing their rank insignia..."

Sarinda says 'Have you ever known a Child of Light or a Questioner to refrain from wearing their signature cloaks?'

Sarinda nods at Hypatia.

Sarinda says softly, 'I wager he is a member of the Black Talon, child.'

Hypatia says 'but not while yet wearing the braids.'

Hypatia says 'the Black Talon Aes Sedai? I have heard little of such a group.'

Odd, there doesn't seem to be any information about that clan.

Sarinda says 'Unless I am mistaken, the neck item he wore is equivalent to a shimmering pendant of obsidian. Even if it belongs to the Children of Light, it is a very rare piece of equipment, and with a rather foreboding theme at that.'

Sarinda says 'But that cloak...that seems to belong to the Black Talon.'

Hypatia says 'the little I had heard, led me to believe they did not exist, '

Sarinda says 'We have more rumors on the Black Talon than anything, but I assure you, they exist.'

Sarinda's face darkens.

Hypatia says 'they must certainly be feeling brazen to self-identify with an item of uniform.'

Hypatia smiles tentatively.

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda sighs loudly.

Hypatia says 'but of course, the arrogance of the man seemed obvious, both in how he approached you Aes Sedai, as well as in flaunting the accoutrements of a Questioner.'

Hypatia says 'few would seek to raise the ire of both groups at once.'

Sarinda says 'I will need to follow up with the Accepted he named. I do not know the story there, but I do not trust this man.'

Hypatiashivers in distaste. "Certainly, I tended to agree with my mother, that speaking with the Children, was like sticking your hand into a cage of angry vipers and expecting not to be bitten.

Hypatia nods in agreement.

Sarinda shakes her head. 'The Children are a nuisance, but they are predictable. Known.'

You say 'I am afraid our lesson was cut short, with his appearance, yet I feel I learned much, simply in noting the errors of my assumption that he was a Whitecloak.'

Sarinda says 'I was on the island of Jafar tonight, hunting rare equipment and defeating the foes there for sport, when I saw this man randomly walk into the castle where we were resting, and hide in the shadows one room away, as if he were waiting to backstab one of us.'

Hypatia says 'oh, I enjoy talking, and listening, though one more than the other, and everyone's story is interesting... '

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Hypatia says 'you noticed the man hide in the next room and wait? As if in ambush?'

Hypatia says 'I really must learn a better knack at being aware of my surroundings.'

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Sarinda says 'But in this case, some of his equipment suggested a Child of the Light, while his cloak suggested otherwise.'

Sarinda says 'I also noted that he was wearing heavy armor but had his weapon sheathed.'

Sarinda says 'Many rogues may do so, as that equipment setup allows them to hunt certain enemies alone and stake all of their gear for themselves.'

Hypatia nods slowly, frowning slightly.

Hypatia looks toward the closed carveddoor. as if peering through to the other side.

Sarinda says 'The idea is if they fail a backstab attempt, they can absorb extra damage and then survive.'

Hypatia says 'It is likely that one such as he, might venture within the Tower to catch unsuspecting Novices?'

Sarinda tilts her head curiously.

Hypatia says 'I heard the warnings that the Criminal Boboliose had done exactly that at the weekend.'

Sarinda says 'I do not know. But Boboliosie absolutely does, and it is possible that he has employed the Black Talon to hunt the other Accepted.'

Sarinda says 'Let me ask you this, child.'

Sarinda says 'What is the Third Oath?'

Sarinda gets a plate of yellow peppers and pork from a belt pack.

Sarinda drinks hot, bitter tea from a cup of blueberry tea.

Sarinda sits down and rests on a stout oaken chair.

Hypatia says 'oh sorry, Aes Sedai. The third oath is….'

Hypatia says 'to not to use the one power as a weapon'

Hypatia says 'except in defense of one's own life.'

Hypatia says 'so while that man was talking calmly with us, and certainly with you there, I did not feel in mortal danger.'

Sarinda says 'Hmm. The exact wording of the full Oath, child.'

Sarinda says 'The wording matters.'

Hypatia thinks hard, mouthing the words.

Sarinda's ageless face is stoic.

Hypatia says 'an Aes Sedai vows never to use the One Power as a weapon except in the extreme defense of their life, their Warder's life, or another Aes Sedai's life.'

Hypatia says 'I dont believe that is quite correct.'

Hypatia looks crestfallen.

Sarinda quotes, 'Under the Light, I vow not to use the One Power as a weapon except against Shadowspawn, or in the last defense of my life, the life of my Warder, or that of another Sister.'

Sarinda says 'Do you wish to become Aes Sedai some day, child?'

Hypatia says 'Forgive me Aes Sedai, for I think I must visit the class room again, to review the teachings.'

Hypatia says 'oh my yes! I do indeeed!'

Sarinda explains, 'The Three Oaths are at the heart of what it means to be Aes Sedai, child. They are graven on my bones, as they will be on yours some day, if you have the privilege of swearing on the Oath Rod. You must memorize, and internalize, all of the Oaths if you wish to advance.'

Hypatia says 'I note that in the oath, the reference to Shadowspawn is particularly important, for the oath implies that one can proactively pursue Shadowspawn with the one power.'

You ponder life, the universe, and everything.

Hypatia says 'is this a correct interpretation?'

Sarinda says 'Indeed. The Oaths were meant to inspire confidence, and trust, in the hearts of men at a time when the world needed these things above all.'

Hypatia peers absently at Galina Casban, her brow furrowed.

Sarinda says 'The next time I see you, child, I want you to be able to recite all of the Three Oaths verbatim, without fail.'

Hypatia says 'it appears times... or at least trust... hav not changed a great deal since that time.'

Hypatia says 'indeed Aes Sedai. I have much to learn. And it appears I need to learn to better judge, what I should be focussing on in my initial studies.'

Sarinda flashes a wolfish grin.

Hypatia whispers to herself under her breath 'and learn to close my mouth more... to hear more from my betters...'

Sarinda smiles warmly.

Sarinda says 'As I said, your instincts were good. But when you kept referring to him as a Child, and a 'zealot'...'

Sarinda says 'That would have been a time to quiet your mouth, and use your ears.'

Sarinda says 'And your eyes.'

Sarinda smirks.

Hypatia smiles demurely. "instead of jumping at conclusions like a bull at a gate.

Sarinda chuckles politely.

Sarinda looks at Galina Casban.

Sarinda says 'Sister, judge the readiness of Hypatia to advance in the Halls of the Tower.'

Galina Casban inclines her head, saying 'As you wish, Sarinda Sedai.'

Galina Casban says 'I shall consult with Alyssa the scribe on this matter.'

You say 'I'll admit I could not see past the lightening bolts and my own assumptions... which was possibly his intent in wearing such items.'

Galina Casban leaves for a moment, then returns.

Galina Casban says 'hypatia has the potential for rank 4.'

Sarinda looks at Hypatia archly.

Sarinda smiles knowingly.

Hypatia says 'it appears I should be spending more time in lessons, rather than chores Aes Sedai.'

Sarinda says 'Novice Hypatia. You clearly have patience, diligence, and an inquisitive spirit.'

You say 'If I may Aes Sedai. I was informed of the roster of lessons to learn from many of the Ajah Aes Sedai within the Tower, yet it appears they reside within the Ajah wings - where Novices should not venture?'

Sarinda says 'That is a common misunderstanding, child. You are permitted to attend all of those lessons, and in fact, I would advise you to study with each of the Ajahs as your earliest convenience.'

Sarinda says 'The lessons the Aes Sedai offer are open to all initiates of the Tower.'

Sarinda says 'Once you are Journey Accepted, you can begin tasks for merits from each Ajah.'

Hypatia says 'so am I permitted to the Ajah wings, excepting behind locked doors? For the sole purpose of undertaking the rostered lessons?'

Sarinda says 'Novices are permitted in any of the Ajah apartments or rooms, as long as they knock before entering, unless they are instructed otherwise.'

Sarinda says 'Hypatia, what I meant to say, and what I think you are understanding, is that having merits alone will not do you any favors here.'

Hypatia bites her lip in silence.

Sarinda says 'The merits will flow easily for you, I suspect.'

Hypatia ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Sarinda says 'But the knowledge you gain, and your ability to demonstrate and evaluate it, that is what determines when the Aes Sedai will deem you ready.'

Sarinda says 'I give you this task.'

Sarinda says 'Speak with another Accepted and ask them about the Three Oaths, and study them diligently.'

Hypatia holds a steady gaze, attentive.

Sarinda says 'And reflect upon what you think it would mean to advance in the Tower. You certainly seem wearied enough of your present position.'

Hypatia shakes her head slightly, a wry smile forming on her lips.

Sarinda says 'Do these things, and I will deem you ready for advancement.'

Hypatia says 'oh, I feel there is so much to learn, I am not wearied at all! But it seems I still need to slow my pace and take greater mindfulness in how I meet with my fellow initiates and how i engage in my lessons.'

Hypatia says 'I do thank you Aes Sedai!'

Sarinda says 'And when I say speak with an Accepted on this. If you struggle to find one due to the times you are awake, a similiar lesson with another Sister would suffice as well, or even a discussion with another novice.'

Sarinda says 'Mariah, Penzei, or Aelrena might be particularly well suited to assist you with this given their training to date.'

Sarinda says 'I do apologize that we did not have sufficient time to reflect upon your spar.'

Sarinda says 'But I must retire soon.'

Hypatia says 'it seemed to me, looking on from outside growing up... that the strength of the Tower was not only i the power and traditions, but in the people who serve it... and in the knowledge they share.'

Sarinda nods in agreement.

Hypatia moves to clamber to her feet

Sarinda stops resting, and clambers on her feet.

A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

l woman
Head tilted back and eyes looking just over your head this girl gives off
an aura of self-possession. The pristine white dress with colored bands is
perfectly pressed and hangs just a couple inches off the floor. Straight
black hair has been perfectly coiffed and frames her pale face. A momentary
stumble and a reddening of the cheeks mars her serene expression.
