If it pleases the Light, I have found myself attracted to the practice of sparring with other novices and Accepted to hone my abilities in combat against other channelers. I know that I have much to learn in this domain, but if it pleases the Light, I hope that sharing these logs and my notes will help others learn from my own experience.

Notes: This was my first spar after studying a new set of weaves with Sheriam Sedai and a new equpment setup (dodge gear with staves) with Coulin Gaidin. In particular, I wanted to test the potential effectiveness of Slice Weaves.

Into the Woods
Scarcely forested lands to the east give way to proper woods growing
steadily into a thick and aged forest. The ground becomes softer as dead
leaves and branches blanket the forest floor and paths become less direct.
Large gaps in the trees to the west and south make passage those ways much
easier than where some tracks crossing the ground lead.

At the Fallen Trees
Toppled logs cover the ground and leading to the east piles begin to form
into large hulking hills filled. The dried wood shows the signs of age and
odd cracks spread across the prone wood. Standing trees stab between the
fallen logs showing their resilience.

This is the message from my end when I successful Slice someone's flows. From my research, as far as I can tell, it adds 2 pulses of lag to the target after it lands. If it pleases the Light, I am still working on learning how to time my next week on the tail end of this one (i.e., at the Point of No Return).

I started this before she was actually weaving. Because it is so fast, I suppose I could have just retried if she had still not started weaving before the timer ran low. I was just trying to shake things up and experiment with how often I should use this instead of a regular damaging weave.

Muddy Foothills
Water breaking through the rocks above, from deep in the island have made
the ground perpetually slick with mud. Deep gouges in the mud show where
something has attempted to climb the impossible step and long still show
where one has slid down from above.

So I learned from this that if the opponent's weaves would land on PONR, then the Slice does not work. In a tie, it will do nothing, so I have to beat them by at least 1 pulse. Thankfully the timer seems to be 7 pulses.

This was my biggest mistake in this fight. The weave was completed, but it failed the Will check, which seems to occur occasionally but not nearly as often as you might think. After it failed, I should have immediately fled or at least tried to Slice again. This was a gamble that I lost because I overestimatd how much time I had to respond.

I made this mistake several times during the spars tonight. I'm eager to try out Slice but she wasn't actually channeling, and in fact waited until I was done, probably because she noticed I was consistently using Slice right as I entered the room. This should have been a Flame Strike.

Call Lightning is only 10 pulses, so I think with the lag from Slice that it's very feasible to interrupt the flows by Slicing it, and then Call Lightning before they can finish Flame Strike. But, I hadn't Woven the Winds in this zone to change the weather yet, so I stuck with a longer Ice Spikes.

In the end, this was a very close spar that seemed evenly matched in skill. Kavia's timing was excellent and I was able to leverage the Slice Weaves effect to throw off her timing and gain the upper hand. I was very impressed with this weave and surprised at how effective it was for this type of combat. In hindsight, however, I also learned that it is very taxing, and I should probably use it more sparingly unless I am consistently losing timing battles against a competent channeler.

This was my biggest mistake in this fight. The weave was completed, but it failed the Will check, which seems to occur occasionally but not nearly as often as you might think. After it failed, I should have immediately fled or at least tried to Slice again. This was a gamble that I lost because I overestimatd how much time I had to respond.

easily overtops the wall surrounding the forest. The spreading branches

steadily into a thick and aged forest. The ground becomes softer as dead
leaves and branches blanket the forest floor and paths become less direct.
Large gaps in the trees to the west and south make passage those ways much
easier than where some tracks crossing the ground lead.

Twisted Branches
Thick trees of the ancient woods twine together making odd shapes and thick
groups many trees around. The way east is completely shut by the twisted
branches. South along the forest leads up to a massive white oak tree
hulking over the rest of the forest.

In the end, this was a very close spar that seemed evenly matched in skill. Kavia's timing was excellent and I was able to leverage the Slice Weaves effect to throw off her timing and gain the upper hand. I was very impressed with this weave and surprised at how effective it was for this type of combat. In hindsight, however, I also learned that it is very taxing, and I should probably use it more sparingly unless I am consistently losing timing battles against a competent channeler.
