over the valley to the south. Paperbark trees cling grimly to the thin

Rising like a breaching whale from the forest to the east and stretching
sinuously to the west the ridge watches over the valley like a kingfisher
over a stream. The ground is stony, fertile soil washed from the ridge and
to the south by the rains. A few scraggly bushes cling desperately to the
rocky ground, lending the only hint of greenery to the barren ridge.

This was a good warm-up for Triss to get her aliases figured out, which threw off her rhythm and weaving. I was really pleased with my timing in a few places. I was also annoyed at myself for trying to use Slice when I was fairly consistently winning the timer war on Flame Strike. I prefer not to try Slice + Ice Spikes against someone at Battered in a friendly spar, so I should have switched over much earlier to just Flame Striking.

Notes: I noticed that Triss tended to weave without engaging, so I tried the same a bit to help speed up timing against her. I knew that she would also probably be more prepared this time now that she had reviewed her aliases, so I wanted to try and see if I could Slice + Ice Spikes to get some significant damage in. Here I was trying to be tricky and get Slice + Ice Spikes to catch up on the damage difference. However, she must have gotten PONR Flame Strike. The delay was noticeable so I swear it should have landed. This was Slice #4 that could/should have been Flame Strike, although I think this would have been a PONR Flame Strike for her anyway.

Overall, Triss did a great job with exploiting my weaknesses and using the tried and true Flame Strike approach instead of something fancy like Slice. I still really like Slice for a few reasons, but I overutilized it in this spar and things could have turned out differently if I had used another weave. I also ended at Strong SPs, which means I should have at least tried Earthquake followed up by Flame Strike if I wanted to try to trip her up.

I think one of the skills I am in need of refining is knowing when to try and sprinkle in a longer weave to trip someone up, and landing that in combat. If I use Flame Strike exclusively, I can win many of my spars due to my timing skills, but I often run out of energy right around the time they hit Beaten. In a real fight to the death, I would need to find a way to land 1-2 Ice Spikes or Call Lightning or I imagine I would end up fizzling out before the fight is over.

Notes: When I first petitioned the Red Ajah to become their apprentice, Morella Sedai was the first Red sister I approached, at which time she invited me to a spar to see my skills in action. Due to nerves and several poor mistakes on my part, she thoroughly trounced me then, although we had a very enlightening conversation and her constructive criticism helped me to identify some mistakes in my technique. I saw her awake yesterday and requested a rematch so that I could hopefully demonstrate how I have been working to improve over the past few weeks. I can already tell that she is highly skilled here and that I need to focus if I want a chance to win. Because I noticed that she was quick to engage and weave, I tried to move away an extra room each time I fled and then return into the room so I could be the first to start my flows. However, she threw off my timing and interrupted me with Earthquake, then immediately followed up with a quick Flame Strike. Thankfully I was able to react quickly and land one at the same time, but I will need superior timing if I want a chance to win.

Trees Shroud the Sky
The forest presses in from all sides, close and claustrophobic. The
surrounding trees grow so near one another as to be enmeshed, their trunks
curved around each other like lovers, tightly woven branches blotting the

I did not know if she was still using Earthquake, and I did not want to goad her into an Earthquake battle. Because we were already engaged, I tried to quickly Slice her weaves and then hit with a fast Flame Strike before she left or landed her own weave. I successfully Sliced her but I did not start the Flame Strike quite quickly enough -- that, or she had recovered some of her flee lag.

My strategy here was to repeat what I had tried, knowing that she was Battered and that one more good weave or two might be enough to get her to Beaten. However, in the heat of the moment I did not realize she had not also engaged in combat, so even though I successfully Sliced, she simply walked out of the room once the lag from Slicing cleared. At this point, I realized I was down to Good energy in saidar so I had maybe just a few weaves left before I would be too tired to form the flows, so I decided to stop using Slice and trust my timing.

This fight was very fast and exhilarating. Morella Sedai had excellent timing and forced me to think quickly on my feet. I was proud of my performance this time and excited to see that I could win against such a skilled opponent. However, I was down to Fading energy at this point and if this were a true match to the death, I likely would have run out of energy before it ended, which would have left me in a precarious situation. I also talked at length with her after the fight about my personal criticism of my skills regarding my hesitation and inexperience with landing longer weaves such as Ice Spikes in a spar. She gave me some suggestions and I am hoping to try that more in upcoming spars.

from within. A stack of iron plates pierced with holes lies besides it. To
the north, a small tent of cured hide is pegged to the heavy, clay soil.

I didn't actually notice this until after the fight while reviewing the log. This staff is from the Elemental Staff weave. I have never used it personally, so we had a great discussion after the spar about the pros/cons of this weave/weapon, which was very informative.

This caught me by surprise, because not all channelers choose to study this weave. I had to immediately change my attack strategy in the moment now that I knew she could use a quick weave, and I wasn't sure how much she would use it or how aggressively she might fight. I decided here to try Flame Strike to see if she would use Earthquake several times, with the plan to flee and try something new if she did again.

So I used Slice Weaves judiciously here to try and interrupt the weave that I assumed was Earthquake (or maybe a Flame Strike), to try and throw her timing off. Slice worked well, but she hasn't built up enough flee lag yet, so I wasn't able to land my weave. I decide to try another strategy for now.

This was a gamble on my part that paid off. I am guessing that her weave failed, or perhaps she was trying a longer weave as well? She might also have simply waited too long to start her weave, as I was 6 pulses in on Ice Spikes before she started. I forgot to ask her afterwards what happened here, but it worked out in my favor, although the damage seems to be on the lower end.

I actually don't know if Tolza used Flame Strike in this fight. Without checking with her, it's possible that she isn't currently practicing it or a similar weave, which would have explained my advantage in weave timing and why she used Earthquake so frequently. It did make for a dynamic spar and I appreciated the chance to practice against someone with a different setup.

After our conversation, I have mixed feelings about Elemental Staff and ultimately would recommend against its use in combat, at least against another channeler. Unless the wiki is outdated (which is possible), it costs 25 SPs to weave, which is a significant investment. Tolza confirmed for me that it still functions such that it cannot be tied off, so the moment you release saidar, it will vanish. The staff has very good OB and exceptional damage for a staff; at 8d4 damage, it ranges between 8-32 per hit, for an average of 20 damage, which is higher than virtually every other staff. However, against channelers such as myself, who currently are almost all using dodge equipment, she was still unable to break my defense (my current kit and setup has me at about 317 total defense depending on how much I'm carrying). Elemental Staff might work better against a channeler who is in combo equipment, where there is a chance you could break their defense if you change your mood to Brave, at which point it could potentially add a very interesting dynamic to the fight. Otherwise, it is really only good against opponents who use abs equipment, and even then, you would have to re-weave it every 3 ticks. Elemental Staff's excellent damage means that it has a niche use in XPing or smobbing, but ultimately I would recommend using a bladed feather staff in those situations due to its slightly lower but comparable damage and being able to conserve your saidar for weaving.

I talked to her about it afterwards, but I did not even notice her landing Chill and it had no obvious bearing on me during this fight. The only time I would recommend bothering with Chill against a channeler opponent would be if you plan to use Bash, which is a niche setup but I think a viable strategy with the right stats. This was an error on my part for several reasons. Because Pandora was still following at this point, I assumed maybe she had ticked back up to Battered and hadn't realized that she was Beaten. My goal was to get her back to Beaten so she would leave. However, I should have just yelled to confirm and conserved SPs, as well as taking a more cautious approach to ensure I didn't fatally injure her. Adanell told me afterwards that Pandora was Critical after this part, which is why she was Healing Pandora in the next section. I also made the mistake of weaving Earthquake a second time just a fraction too fast, thus canceling myself and opening the door for Adanell to land a weave on me.

Overall, I used Earthquake a few more times than I probably needed to, but I also successfully landed Ice Spikes multiple times. I have been working on landing some longer weaves during the fight and mixing up my approach so I can conserve SPs better, so this was great practice for that. I missed a few opportunities to rest and recover SPs, and I need to be more mindful of the tick to recover that. Otherwise, I thought this went really well.
