Den of the Red Ajah
This room reflects the cool nature of the Red Ajah, the furnishings just as
severe as the rest of the room. A gilded chair rests near the center of the
room, accompanied by an equally elaborate dark wooden desk. Chairs have
been drawn up to the tall, arched windows, which look over the western side
of Tar Valon, the western bank of the Erinin and Dragonmount beyond,
serving as a constant reminder of the purpose of the Red Ajah.

A chair made of red oak rests next to the table. [2]
A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
Amarea Helsen, Tower Accepted is standing here.
Perenelle Flamel is standing here.
Isela Sedai is standing here.
A young girl in a plain white dress stands here.
A silver-haired Aes Sedai sits here, reading.
A Red Sister stares down here nose here.
Galina Casban completely ignores you.
Isela says 'Well, Perenelle, it seems you may have stumbled into a new life. You say you've read books about the Source. What have you learned about the White Tower?'
Isela gestures to a chair of red oak.
Perenelle sits down on a stout oaken chair.
Perenelle says 'Well, though I don't speak the Old Tongue, I know that the term Aes Sedai means Servant of All from those same books. I also know that many either fear or distrust them, though that seems mostly Tairens and Whitec...er Children of the Light in earnest.'
Perenelle says 'That I've seen and heard from, well, lots of places to be honest.'
Isela nods. 'Servants of All, indeed. Fear and distrust are born from ignorance. You will learn otherwise.'
Perenelle says 'As for more on what goes on here? Only a bit of what I've observed staying here for about a week.'
Isela says 'And why did we happen upon you in Four Kings of all places, instead of you being inducted a week ago?'
Isela says 'Have you spoken with any other Aes Sedai?'
Perenelle says 'Well, as I said, the Aes Sedai seem awfully busy and rushing to and from a lot of things going on.'
Isela waves a hand dismissively. 'We ARE busy, child.'
Isela says 'But the Power you possess cannot be ignored.'
Perenelle says 'Etain Sedai? I think that's her name, but she also said something about being away? So I don't know why she didn't.'
Isela scoffs. 'Some of the other Ajahs may be happy to pass you by, but from what I've heard and seen so far you need to be reigned in before you get yourself or someone else hurt.'
Isela says 'So now you will listen, and learn.'
Perenelle frowns a bit but concentrates on Isela and her words.
Isela says 'The White Tower has stood for three thousand years and grows in strength when we find women who can touch the Source and channel the One Power. You may not realize it, but you are such a woman. What you have done these past few weeks will not go away.'
Isela says 'It will only get stronger and more frequent, and you'll want to continue doing it more and more.'
Perenelle opens her mouth, but closes it quickly, biting off anything she might have said.
Isela says 'It is our job to ensure that you don't burn yourself to a cinder in the process.'
Isela says 'This feeling of coldness you have...'
Isela taps a finger to her lips.
Isela says 'Can you try it again?'
Perenelle looks out the window at the oppressive gray skies, takes a deep breath.
Lyla senses Perenelle connecting to the True Source.
Lyla watches Perenelle closely.
Isela's eyes widen ever so slightly.
A slight wave of cold emanates from Perenelle in all directions, the water nearest her grows a slight rime of frost.
Lyla whispers to Isela 'Does she need to see the sky, I wonder? I had a similar problem the first few times I channeled.'
Perenelle shivers a little, a puff of fogged breath.
Isela nods at Lyla.
Perenelle slumps in the chair a bit.
Isela walks to the window and pulls the curtain, closing off the view of outside.
Perenelle says 'Not...having a target to push it at is a bit harder.'
Perenelle rubs her arms as warmth returns in the area.
Isela's tone shifts from firm to soft. 'That was very good, Perenelle. Try it again, but this time I want you to close your eyes.'
Isela says 'Picture a frozen river, with the water rushing underneath.'
Perenelle closes her eyes, nodding at the words.
Isela says 'Feel the water coursing against the banks.'
Perenelle eyes dart under the closed eyelids, her breathing slowing.
Isela says 'Now picture a crystal rose, its petals slowly unfurling.'
Isela says 'Open yourself with the petals, and accept the river. Be the banks, slowly guiding it.'
Perenelle frowns slightly, though nods. Faltering at first, her hands twitching as if to pull something. Another deep inhalation then...
Lyla senses Perenelle connecting to the True Source.
Isela nods in agreement.
Isela says 'Let it all go, Perenelle. Release the Source.'
Perenelle shivering a bit, eyes shut, steadying her breathing. She frowns again, one of slight displeasure, but the feeling of her touching the Source stops.
Lyla smiles happily.
Isela says 'Over time, you'll learn to better control embracing and releasing the Source.'
Perenelle opens her eyes, blinking a bit. 'Is...is that what that is?'
Isela nods in agreement.
Isela says 'It turns the Wheel of Time itself, just as you said.'
Isela says 'You can touch it, and with training, you can channel it.'
Perenelle says 'I....felt it flowing, pushing against...something?'
Isela says 'Thus far it seems you've been doing just that, but without knowing what you do.'
Perenelle rubs her arms again.
Isela says 'As Amarea noted, you may have developed a "block" in the short time you've been touching the Source, perhaps needing to feel cold or see a chilly sky in order to embrace at will.'
Isela says 'We'll break that down in short order, if it exists.'
Perenelle nods slowly.
Isela says 'It's time I told you what life is like here, so you can make the right decision to join us.'
Isela says 'Does your family in Illian know where you've been these past few weeks?'
Perenelle starts to speak, a tremble in her voice, coughing a little to clear it.
Perenelle says 'I've sent a missive to father, though whether its reached him or not, I don't know yet. It was only sent a week ago.'
Perenelle says 'The roads being what they are and all. I've not received a reply yet at least, though wouldn't expect to quite yet.'
Isela says 'So did you run away from home, child?'
Isela's stern look reappears.
Lyla gives Perenelle a comforting look. 'Tell the full truth, and don't leave anything out.'
Perenelle says 'No! No, as I said, father wanted me to get some experience in the world. He has no other child and wants his business to grow with my help.'
Perenelle says 'I have a few letters of credit to draw on, which he is aware of. Though he didn't set an itinerary either.'
Isela nods. 'Good. Well, I'm sure he'll be surprised to hear of this new development.'
Perenelle says 'I....yes, he probably will. I didn't put in any of Amarea's suspicions in my letter.'
Isela briskly wipes her hands together. 'I won't steer you wrong, Perenelle. The White Tower is a challenging place. If you hadn't already started channeling, I am unsure whether we would accept you at all. Life here is difficult, but it is the only place in the world where you can be certain to receive the training which will keep you and everyone you know safe.'
Isela says 'I recommend you continue on here until at least we have deemed you safe.'
Isela adopts a lecturing tone.
Isela says 'What that means in practicality is that you will forsake your former life, adopt a white dress, and stay here in Tar Valon for your training. You will not be allowed to leave the island, and if you do, you will be deemed a runaway and we will come find you.'
Isela says 'Once you are an initiate of the Tower, we will not let you go until we are certain you're no longer a danger.'
Isela gives Perenelle a hard look.
Isela says 'Do you understand everything I've said, child?'
Perenelle looks at the table, a troubled look on her face. 'Is it that dangerous then? I didn't set out to Tar Valon to join the White Tower. Is it truly bad enough that I could hurt someone I care for?'
Isela says 'Without proper training, there is no way to tell. Do you want to take that risk?'
Isela turns back to Perenelle.
Perenelle gnaws on her lower lip, shaking her head. 'No, I don't. I've seen what I can do on purpose, with just a little effort and some knowledge that I'm doing something.'
Amarea looks at Perenelle.
Isela nods at Perenelle.
Isela says 'Fortunately, you will not have to fear ending up like that poor man Dougan we met on the road.'
Perenelle says 'I don't think I could bear it if I harmed father...or...well, I suppose that'll be on hold now if ever to come about.'
Amarea nods thoughtfully.
Isela says 'Though channeling is dangerous, you will touch saidar, the female half of the True Source.'
Isela says 'Men touch saidin, which is tainted by the Dark One, destining them all to go mad.'
Perenelle says 'I understand, everyone knows men that do that...well, best not to contemplate what happens to them so its said. Oh....that....that sounds very bad.'
Amarea shivers uncomfortably.
Perenelle says 'Then I suppose while there is a choice, there really isn't, is there?'
Isela says 'Though you have no fear of going mad, there are still dangers until you are properly trained.'
Isela says 'Lyla and Amarea here are among the Accepted. If you prove yourself worthy of advancement, you may one day join their ranks.'
Isela says 'Then you'll be afford a bit more freedom in exchange for much more responsibility.'
Perenelle nods slowly again.
Perenelle says 'I had thought that might be the case between the white dressed younger women and the ones with the colored bands at the hem.'
Isela nods at Perenelle.
Isela stands, eyeing Perenelle.
Perenelle says 'Then I suppse I have to pack away my silks and take on this white dress.'
Perenelle clambers to her feet.
Isela says 'If that is your choice, we shall write your name in the Book of Novices.'
Amarea offers an encouraging smile and sits up a little straighter in her seat.
Perenelle closes her eyes briefly, giving a brisk nod.
Isela says 'Remember, if you decide to leave the White Tower of your own accord, you will not be allowed back in.'
Isela says 'Do you still want to join us, Perenelle?'
Perenelle says 'Yes, I don't want to hurt anyone that doesn't deserve it.'
Lyla grins at her.
Isela beckons everyone to follow her.

Isela closes the woodendoor.
Isela says 'This is Sheriam, our Mistress of Novices.'
The woodendoor is opened from the other side.
Amarea has arrived from the east.
Amarea closes the woodendoor.
Amarea blushes faintly.
