Melosa and Lorrah - an Impromptu class

Post by Lorrah » Thu Jun 06, 2024 11:55 am

Between running errands for Aes Sedai, Lorrah is catching her breath at the fountain and taking an opportunity to dabble cool water on her flushed skin. A pigeon delivers a note.

Participants: Lorrah & Melosa

Tower Square
This side of the square is the southern section of the Tower Square.
In the center is the walled off White Tower. To the south a large
boulevard opens up leading to the Southharbor. To the north you see
the southern gate of the Tower grounds. The square continues east
and west.
A large banner rests here, depicting a map of Tar Valon.

There is something written upon it:

Message to Lorrah, Novice of the White Tower

Lorrah, please meet me in the Classroom.

In service of the Light,
Melosa Beshar, Accepted and Apprentice to the Green Ajah

Tarlomen's Gate
Wide enough for fifteen men abreast, the gates allowing access to the Tower
grounds are iron bound. The gilded Flames of Tar Valon set high up in the
thick timber have been polished to a shine that a Tinker would find
satisfactory. A cool river breeze wafts through the gate, making the trees
and bushes in the grounds to the north rustle and sway. The pale shaft of
the White Tower lies to the north, reaching a hundred spans into the air.

Before the White Tower
The White Tower looms to the north, rising over a hundred spans into the
sky. Trees and bushes, both short and tall, are sprinkled around the path
and throughout the Tower grounds. The path is covered by pieces of small
white gravel and bordered by white bricks. White steps, at least a pace
deep and slightly arched in the middle, lead up to the White Tower.

A Large Round Entry Hall
Two intricately carved doors, wide enough for fifteen men abreast lie to
the south, allowing entry into this large, round entry hall. Archways in
the walls of stonework the color of bleached bone allow for passage deeper
into the White Tower. This hall is used to receive petitioners who seek
council from an Aes Sedai. The marble floor has been inlaid with a mosaic
of a spiral of blue, brown, gray, green, red, white and yellow, which
converges in the center of the large, domed hall.
[ obvious exits: N S ]
Zone: White Tower Ground Floor

In the Wide Hallway
Walls of stonework the color of bleached bone contrast sharply with the
floors of brightly colored tiles in all seven colors of the Ajahs. Golden
stand lamps are spaced evenly along the corridor, spreading pools of warm,
flickering light both day and night. Niches containing statuettes or
expensive Sea Folk vases break the monotony of the white walls.

Intersection of Halls
Wide hallways join together under a tall, vaulted dome in the center of the
Tower. The dome has been broken up into seven sections, with each section
depicting women of a particular Ajah at work. The brightly colored floor
tiles of the hallways meet at the edge of the intersection, lining the
walls in the seven colors of the Ajahs. The center floor has been inlaid
with a white marble Flame of Tar Valon, lined with black marble.

In the Broad Hallway
Pale stonework the color of bleached bone reaches up from the brightly
colored floor tiles and arches fifteen feet overhead, forming one of the
White Tower's main hallways. Despite the walls having been decorated with
murals and wall hanging, archways leading deeper into the Tower break the
stark monotony of the endless stretch of walls.

Corridor Near the Stairwell
A narrow stairs opens up just off a unremarkable landing. While the walls
have been constructed with the signature pale white stone that gives the
White Tower its name, the floor is a plain gray stone banded with tiles in
green, red, blue and gray. An old painting, protected by wards of the One
Power hangs on the wall opposite the stairs, depicting a woman in a
seven-striped stole as a Flame of Tar Valon burns above her upturned palm.

Lorrah's blood freezes as you hear a raven's death cry.

In the Wide Hallway
The walls of the entire corridor are covered with finely woven tapestries
and paintings. One tapestry depicts a majestic woman leading a charge
against a horde of trollocs that number more than twice as many as the
human force. One of the paintings is a portrait of a queenly woman
resembling the one depicted on the tapestry. The vaulted ceiling rises at
least fifteen feet above the floor tiles, which are arranged in a pattern
of glossy blue and gray tiles that adorn the gray stone floor.

Crossing on the Ramp
Two perpendicular hallways join a sloping circular ramp at a level section.
Ribs that have been intricately decorated with various types of leaves
branch out from the corners and meet overhead, creating a tall vaulted
ceiling at least fifteen feet in height. To the east and south lie long
straight corridors with many doors, while the ramp which runs north and
west begins to curve out of sight in either direction.

A Green Sister struts about the halls.

On the Spiralling Ramp
Slabs of smooth, pale white stone banded by patterns in seven bright colors
descend from the upper level and corkscrew endlessly down into the depths
of the White Tower. The skilled work of Ogier hands, not a single seam is
evident in the flowing masonry. Coiling vines bearing seven types of leaves
are carved in friezes crowning the walls, the carvings so lifelike they are
almost seem to grow from the stone, waiting for a breeze to stir them. A
large wall hanging depicts the fallen city of Allorallen.

Branching Off the Ramp
The spiralling ramp levels out for a stretch where corridors from the west
and south meet. The colorful patterns of the floortiles of both the
corridors and the ramp merge seamlessly, speaking of the quality of the
Ogier stonemasons' work. The arched ceiling is at least fifteen feet high
and a masterfully carved frieze of leaves of bonsai, cedar, holly, juniper,
oak, olive and redwood runs along thetop of the impost, just below the
lowest part of the curvature of the arch.

In the Hallway
This gray stone hallway is plain looking, although its floor tiles of red
and green liven up the area. Two tapestries of flowered trees and
stout-beaked birds hang on the wall, so colorful they seem unlikely to be
real. An unmarked wooden door lies between the tapestries.

Above the Stairwell
The gray stone floor of the hallway with red, green, gray and blue floor
tiles gives way to a narrow stairwell. A six-sided hanging lantern hanging
from the stairs' ceiling casts a flickering light on the steps, preventing
the area of being shrouded in darkness. A portrait of a woman wearing a
seven-striped stole hangs on the gray stone wall opposite the stairs.

A pointed archway containing an ironbound wooden door leads to the west,
into the wing that extends westwards from the shaft of the White Tower.

that is still in use today. Glossy gray and blue floor tiles brighten up
the plain gray stone floor that is used in this area.

Intersection on the Ramp
The curvature of the outer wall of the ramp is abruptly interrupted by an
archway that opens up towards a corridor. The frieze of carved leaves which
embellishes the upper part of the curving wall have been seamlessly
connected to its counterparts in the corridor. Richly decorated ribs branch
off of the frieze to support the vaulted ceiling. Brightly colored tiles
form a pattern on the floor, illuminated by gilded stand lamps.

In the Spiralling Corridor
A ramp curves away out of sight to the west and east, connecting the floors
in the Tower. Leaves of several varieties curl and twine in the stonework
frieze, as well as the ribbing of the vaulted ceiling. The Ogier's work is
so life-like, the blossoms and leaves seem almost ready to flutter in a
breeze and fall to the brightly colored floor tiles. A wall hanging
depicting the fall of the city Londaren Cor during the Trolloc Wars
decorates the wall opposite where a corridor joins the ramp.

Lorrah smiles happily.

Melosa continues writing on the black board as Lorrah enters the classroom.

Lorrah says 'I got a your message Accepted'

Melosa turns around, dusts off her hands and nods.

Lorrah looks around for somewhere to sit.
Lorrah emote: Lorrah looks around for somewhere to sit.

Lorrah sits down.

cl door
It's already closed!

Melosa says 'Good, good.'

Melosa says 'Well, I had some time between classes and thought it be good that we have a word'

Lorrah gets out a worn notebook with a tattered leather cover.

smi melosa
Lorrah smiles at her.

Melosa leans against the dais and stares at Lorrah unblinkingly.

Lorrah says 'Ow, that would be wonderful, thanks. It's always so busy around here.'

Lorrah arranges her desk, just so.

Melosa says 'Tell me, Lorrah. You differ quite greatly from the other girls from the White Tower in
your choice of wear.'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'Most choose to be in clothing that allows for a greater degree of freedom.'

Melosa says 'Yet, for some reason, you are different.'

Melosa says 'Do tell.'

Lorrah says 'I found, while I was growing up, I was less nimble than other girls, so when my uncle suggested I learn how to defend myself, we agreed this would be the best attire.

Lorrah says 'i wore out SO many silk stocking...'

Melosa smiles slightly.

Melosa says 'You are certainly unique in that choice.'

Lorrah murmors 'the Wheel weaves as it wills'.

Melosa nods.

Lorrah says 'Have you any advice, based on your own experience, on defending myself Accepted?'

Melosa starts to slowly pace along the front of the room.

Melosa says 'As you know, channeling requires a great deal of concentration and focus.'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'Having tried heavy armor like that which you are wearing before'

Melosa says 'I could hardly hear myself think.'

Melosa says 'How has it been for you?'

Lorrah ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Lorrah says 'I must admit, when I started wearing it it was very distracting. Now, though, I'm used to it.

Lorrah says 'well, except for the rubbing!'

Lorrah winces

Melosa says 'And channeling while being attacked and undoubtedly being rattled around has been
possible?'

Lorrah says 'Oftentimes yes. I learned a lot sparring with yourself and others here.'

Melosa turns away from the novice and walks to the dais, picking a single sheet of cream-coloured
paper.

Lorrah says 'for example, hammer of air is exceptionally distracting, sometimes even interrupting what I
am doing completely.'

Lorrah says 'that includes physical attacks.'

Melosa says 'I've studied your recent training report'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'And it seems to me that you have not yet fully grasped the implications of this
choice.'

Lorrah says 'Sometimes, Accepted, choice isn't always within out grasp.'

Melosa says 'You have chosen a more... physical approach to fighting your enemy.'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'I would like to show you another way.'

Lorrah says 'Ok!'

Melosa says 'Do you have training in Flame Strike or Hammer of Air?'

Lorrah says 'hammer of air, yes. I have not yet the strength to learn flame strike without impacting
weaves which benefit others.'

Melosa says 'We shall adjourn shortly to the woods but I would like to explain one thing first.'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'Those two weaves I've mentioned and also in my previous class, are exceptionally
simple'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Melosa says 'And with that comes speed.'

Melosa says 'If one is trained in it, you can still compose these two flows even while fighting.'

Melosa says 'Without interruption'

Melosa says 'Are you familiar with that?'

Lorrah says 'I slept in and was unable to attend that class, unfortunately. Still, I appreciate you
taking notes for those of us who did. And yes, they were quite thorough.'

Melosa says 'Between blows from the enemy, you can compose a weave and have it land on the opponent
before the next blow lands.'

Melosa says 'I would like us to try that shortly.'

Melosa beckons Lorrah to follow her.

Melosa says 'Come.'

embellishes the upper part of the curving wall have been seamlessly
connected to its counterparts in the corridor.

A large man eyes the surroundings warily, every movement fluid.

Hallway Outside the Classrooms
This unremarkable gray stone hallway and landing off a stairwell is lined
with a number of doors, marked with the numbers one through twenty. Two
large double doors sit in a pointed archway on the northern end of the
corridor. A portrait of a woman wearing a seven-striped stole surrounded by
battle scenes hangs on the wall opposite the stairwell.

In the Classroom
A board of black slate hangs on the wall near the door, suggesting this
room is used as a classroom. The room is plain and windowless and has
enough place to seat thirty students. A dais with a desk sits at the front
of the room, where the Aes Sedai or Accepted teaching the class can sit.

Melosa Beshar, Accepted and Apprentice to the Green Ajah is standing here.
A woman with an ageless face stands here.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.

Melosa closes the door.

Lorrah settles back down behind her table.

Lorrah sits down.

Melosa brushes off bits of charred wood and splinters from her banded dress.

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Lorrah channels several threads of fire onto the bottom of her boot, burning something off. Yuck!
Lorrah emote: Lorrah channels several threads of fire onto the bottom of her boot, burning something
off. Yuck!

Lorrah suddenly look suspiciously innocent.

Melosa smoothens her skirts and composes herself.

Melosa says 'Now.'

Melosa says 'I do believe you've demonstrated ample knowledge of this particular technique.'

Lorrah smiles happily.

Melosa says 'But we both know some practice is required.'

nod melosa

Lorrah nods at her.

Melosa says 'So make that your assignment from this class.'

Melosa says 'I do leave you with something to think about.'

Lorrah sits down and rests his tired bones.

Melosa says 'Consider the new discoveries around Slice.'

Lorrah ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Lorrah says 'hmm, a most interesting development.'

Lorrah says 'rather frightening as well, to be honest.'

Melosa says 'Would that be something worthwhile for you to be trained in especially in the event you
ever had to battle a dreadlord?'

Melosa says 'Light send that would not be the situation any time soon.'

Melosa looks grim.

Lorrah says 'as soon as i have strength enough to do so, yes.'

Melosa says 'Consider how that could be useful for you.'

Melosa says 'If it would be.'

Melosa says 'We can have that discussion during our next class.'

Melosa says 'For the moment, any questions, Lorrah?'

Lorrah says 'i'm curious Accepted, are there any ways to interrupt that weave?'

Melosa says 'No, there is not'

Melosa says 'Well. That is not entirely correct'

Melosa says 'It is possible.'

Melosa says 'But highly improbable that a Slice be interrupted by another Slice.'

Melosa says 'After all, it takes three short threads to compose that weave.'

Lorrah taps her foot on the floor as she ponders on the issue.

Melosa says 'Any other questions, Novice?'

Lorrah says 'Just one more Accepted. There is another even more erroneous weave called 'shield' I have
read about. If, light forbid, you were shielded, is there anything you could do?'

Melosa says 'Run. Very fast and very far.'

Lorrah nods in agreement.

Lorrah says 'So there's no way to interrupt the weave once it's in place?'

Lorrah shivers uncomfortably.

Melosa pauses before answering the question posed to her, choosing her words carefully.

Melosa says 'I do not believe so, Novice. But you would have to speak to one of the Red Ajah on
that. I believe they know more about it than any other.'

Lorrah ponders life, the universe, and everything.

Lorrah takes notes in a neat hand, finishing each sentence with a flourish.

Lorrah says 'That's a lot to think about. Thanks for your time Accepted.'

Melosa nods at Lorrah.

Melosa says 'You are dismissed. Well done so far and keep up the good work.'

Melosa says 'Run along then.'

Melosa says 'I look forward to seeing your prorgess.'

Lorrah smiles happily.

curt sedai
Lorrah curtseys before her.

Melosa turns to her papers while absent mindedly waving to the novice.

smi melosa

Lorrah smiles at her.

Lorrah waves.

Melosa turns to her papers while absent mindedly waving to the novice to shut the door behind her.
