Julianna al’Aldian lead Trysstianna into a small reading room just before the large doors to the Tower library. The young novice had asked Julianna to meet her there, something about lessons. At least, that is what she thought the woman had asked. Trysstianna’s dialect, and her odd word choice, often made it difficult to understand the woman. Though it was never spoken of, Julianna had gathered from whispered rumors that Trysstianna was a former damane, a woman bound and kept prisoner by the Seanchan Empire. Just thinking of being leashed like a damane was enough to send shivers down Julianna’s spine, and she almost reached out to saidar just to reassure herself that she was able.

The room they had selected was small, with a flanked by several chairs dominating the center. A number of manuscripts and tomes were spread out, and cover nearly all the space on the table, and a fresh scroll lies open, covered in notes. But this was as good a place as any for a lesson, albeit impromptu, due to the fact that the room was paneled in heavy fabric, and with the door closed, outside sounds were completely muffled.

Julianna closed the door behind them, taking a seat at one of the chairs around the table. Trysstianna remained standing, at military alert, hands behind her back and eyes forward and down. She appeared to be waiting for something. Julianna blinked in confusion for a moment before realizing. Of course, the woman would not sit until she was told that she was allowed. Julianna gestureed to an empty chair, “Please, take a seat!

Trysstianna quickly slipped into the chair across from Julianna. Her short stature only more realised as she sits. Once she settled herself in the chair, she took a short drink from a skin on her belt.

There was brief, almost awkward silence that passed between them. Eventually, Julianna broke the silence, “I must apologize, but I do not have any lessons prepared at the moment, but I would be happy to discuss any topics you might be interested in.”

Trysstianna rifles through her backpack and withdraws a book whose title appears to be written in the Old Tongue. The illustration depicts a man and woman linked and channeling together. 'Miss? I wondered if you might know any of the Old Tongue? I know much but I wish to be able to speak it fluently Miss.'

Julianna pursed her lips thoughtfully, “I know some, though I am not sure I would say I am fluent.”

Trysstianna nodded thoughtfully. 'Would Miss perhaps like to study it with me?'

Julianna smiled happily, “I think that would be wise. I too should brush up on my Old Tongue.” The Old Tongue…she had not done much in the Old Tongue since she was a girl, traveling with her father in his capacity as a barrister north of Illian. Trysstianna lifted the old book up onto the table and scoots her chair about so you can both read it at the same time. “Okay Miss?”

Julianna nodded slowly, pulling her chair closer to Anna’s so that the two of them can read the text. Trysstianna spoke, her voice coming in a characteristic drawl,”Dae Gorista'Saidar e Saidin Perant,” reading out the title of the book in what sounds like perfect Old Tongue, but she looks confused after saying it, so perhaps she doesn't know what it means.

Julianna pursed her lips, her brow furrowing as she mouths the words. Their meaning slowly came to her, as if rising from a distant fog. “Well, certainly saidar and saidin, references the One Power. 'Garista' is use?”

Trysstianna nodded eagerly, enjoying the subject immensely. 'Perant means together Miss.”
Julianna smiled, chuckling to herself. “Together! Yes, that is correct.” She could not help but to smile at Anna’s obvious excitement.

Trysstianna drawled, “Daes Use of Saidar and Saidin Together?”

Julianna nodded, “I think you are correct. This book must be old...before the Breaking. Did you find it in the library?”

Trysstianna continued, “Dae means complex too Miss.”

Julianna cocked her head at this. “Complex? I...I admit I did not know of that translation.”

Trysstianna nodded, “As in Daes Dae'mar, the game of houses, the very complex social interactions of the elite and lower caste.” Of course. That was rather obvious.

Trysstianna continued, “Anna found it at the bottom of the stairs that lead to the fiction section Miss.”
Julianna looked up from the book, a look of shock crossing over her face. “On the floor...? The librarians would be livid if they knew.”

Trysstianna nods to this. “I found dozens of books on the floor, as if a Novice just hid them instead of shelving them properly.”

A deep from crossed Julianna’s face. Growing up the daughter of a barrister gave her a special respect for books. When she responded, her voice was dry, “That happens...rarely, when a novice or Accepted has a particular interest and does not want the book to be removed. It is inexcusable, regardless.”

“That is not a nice thing to do,” the novice whispered.

Julianna shook her head, “No, it is not. A girl caught doing that...well, I cannot imagine she would walk straight for weeks after the Brown Ajah and Sheriam Sedai were through with them.”

Trysstianna nods, a look of fear in her eyes. “Anna will report any girl she sees doing such Miss.”

Julianna smiled tenderly, "As you should. The library will be better off for it."

Trysstianna turns to what is clearly the introductory page. “What does it say now Miss?”

Julianna looked over the first page, her lips moving soundlessly as she reads in her head. "From what I can translate, it is an account, for lack of a better description, about the interplay of channeling saidar and saidin and the effect of linking on certain weaves.

Trysstianna’s face lit up with eagerness, “That is so interesting Miss! How long do you think it will take to translate?”
Julianna cocked her head to the side, considering, “The whole book? 'That, I imagine, would take quite some time. At least if I were translating it. For someone more adept in the Old Tongue...I am not sure. Perhaps a few days?”
“If only men did not go mad. It would be nice to work miracles again.”

Julianna smiled wistfully, her thoughts suddenly far away, “Indeed. Imagine what a circle of men and women could accomplish? The sheer volume of the Power would...well I imagine it could accomplish just about anything. And there is so much that was lost in the Breaking, so many nuances that are beyond us now.”

A soft silence followed before Trysstianna drew Julianna back to the present moment, “What does Miss study in her free time?”

Julianna thought for a few moments before responding, “A touch of everything, though my studies recently have been in politics. Something that Etain Sedai impressed upon me is that the Yellow Ajah seeks balance not only in Healing the sick, but by pursuing an equilibrium of sorts in all things. I figured that looking in politics, the ebb and flow of power, might be a good place to start learning about how to Heal the nations.”

Trysstianna’s face darkened a bit, “Anna would just as soon let other people decide for her Miss.”

Julianna frowned, her words coming slowly as if she were tasting each one before speaking, “It may not be my place to say this, Anna, but I imagine that you will need to start learning to make those decisions yourself, soon enough. Aes Sedai answer to no one by the Amyrlin. Or the Hall. If you hope to wear the shawl, that is.

Trysstianna drawled, “Yes Miss.”

Julianna sensed Trysstianna’s sudden shift in mood, and the woman spoke quickly, “But that is what the Tower is about, teaching its initiates the confidence and knowledge necessary to be Aes Sedai.”

Trysstianna sighed and began packing up the book. 'Thank you for your time Miss. Anna must… I must be getting to bed.”

Julianna nodded, a look of surprise creeping across her face at the abrupt and unceremonious end to the impromptu less. She covered her surprise with a smile, “Of course. Feel free to reach out to me at any time.”

Trysstianna nodded, standing up and stepping behind and to Julianna’s right. “Thank you, Miss,” she said, before collecting her bag and leaving the reading room. Julianna sat for a few moments before rising to her feet. Well, that was an interesting first lesson.
