They're different mobs, and DS is generally a bit more dangerous. The blighted deer do fight back, as do the whelps.

I may be out of the statting game for awhile, but I don't recall cute brown deer fighting back for years now but sickly blighted deer do and they can easily kill a newbie troll. This makes trolls statting very dependent on saplings.
