Mariah looks at a croaking frog.
Damena says 'Good day, Accepted.'
Mariah says 'More frogs?'
Damena says 'I assume these frogs are nothing to do with you.'
Mariah mutters to herself
Aelrena says 'And to you, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena shakes her head.
Mariah says 'No Aes Sedai. The Novice to frog ratio seems to be linear.'
Aelrena says 'I'm not certain where they came from, I've been locked into the fourth depository of late.'
Damena leans down to pick up a frog, inspecting it.
Mariah says 'We were having some trouble with a Novice, who has a lax understanding of what is expected of her.'
Damena says 'Is that so?'
Damena says 'In my day, Novices were not bold enough to be so lax.'
Aelrena says 'I'm afraid so, I walked into a rather... inappropriate conversation between Mariah and Lexiane, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Perhaps she needs a reminder of what discipline is expected of those in the Tower.'
Damena arches an eyebrow.
Aelrena shakes her head.
Damena says 'Accepted Mariah was being inappropriate?'
Aelrena shakes her head.
Damena looks at Mariah appraisingly.
Mariah says 'I was trying to just mention what her obligations are. But her perception is if she can't get in trouble for not doing dishes, then she doesn't need to do them, and cited a discussion with Accepted Prya'
Damena says 'I see.'
Aelrena says 'No, Aes Sedai. The novice seems to believe that Mariah is making up rules, and that she doesn't have to complete her assigned chores.'
Damena says 'Come with me.'
Damena beckons everyone to follow her.
Aelrena nods in agreement.
Mariah says 'I then tried to remove some of the ambiguity and ordered her to do 10 dishes. She did one and said that satisfied the requirement to do SOME dishes.'
Mariah says 'We are following.'
Study of the Brown Ajah
Tall, arched windows in the northern wall open to a balcony, providing a
choice view of the Erinin as it flows south from the Borderlands. Half the
seating in the room is drawn up around the windows, showing that the
occupants appreciate the panorama. The remaining seats are drawn up in
circles of six to eight, allowing Brown Sisters to discuss the furtherance
of knowledge, or new theories in an informal atmosphere. Colorful wall
hangings depicting still lifes decorate the pale white walls.

A large desk made of fine, thick wood stands across the room from here.
A large man eyes the surroundings warily, every movement fluid.
A silver-haired Aes Sedai sits here, reading.
A Brown Sister is here, frowning pensively.
Danelle Sedai, sitter for the Brown Ajah stands here deep in thought.
Aelrena has arrived from the south.
Mariah has arrived from the south.
Damena says 'What is this irksome girl's name?'
Mariah says 'A Novice named Lexiane.'
A croaking frog has arrived from the south.
Damena says 'Danelle, summon Lexiane.'

A croaking frog is dead! R.I.P.
Damena's blood freezes as you hear a croaking frog's death cry.
Danelle Sedai says 'I will send a pigeon to her at once, Damena.'
Damena arches an eyebrow.
Mariah says '(she seems to be idle)'
Damena says 'A novice should not be so far away as to need a pigeon to be summoned.'
Aelrena shakes her head.
Aelrena's tone is dry, and her mouth thins "Apparently trying to find the handbook entails leaving the city to this novice."
Aelrena shakes her head.
Mariah says 'When she wouldn't listen to the authority of an Accepted to wash 10 dishes is when I asked for your assistance.'
Damena smirks.
Damena says 'Danelle, summon Lexiane'
Danelle Sedai says 'I will send a pigeon to her at once, Damena.'
Mariah says 'And the only reason I would bother with an order like that is because she was being flippant.'
Damena says 'Very well done, Accepted.'
Damena says 'Though I do not generally feel my time needs to be spent disciplining novices.'
Damena says 'As it happens, I was just perusing the novice rules with Saerin.'
Mariah says 'If I felt she would learn a lesson, I would have handled it myself. But she needed a reminder of authority.'
Mariah hastily adds to the end 'Aes Sedai."
A novice has arrived from the south.
Mariah looks at a novice.
Mariah shakes her head to Damena, indicating that is not the Novice we were looking for.
Damena points towards the novice. 'Is this the girl?'
Damena nods curtly.
Damena flicks a few specks of dust from her fine linen dress.
Lexiane has arrived from the south.
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Lexiane says 'Hello, Damena Sedai'
Lexiane says 'Hello, Accepted'
Damena is carrying:
a book of rules for novices
Aelrena nods in greeting to the Novice.
Damena says 'Impressive that you know my name girl. I hope my reputation precedes me.'
Lexiane smiles demurely, head bowed. The image is slightly ruined by her uneven haircut.
Mariah nods in acknowledgment to the Novice.
Damena gives Lexiane a stern look.
Damena says 'Stand up straight, girl.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Damena Sedai.'
Lexiane stands up straighter. She is not that tall.
Damena says 'It seems you have been having some trouble finding rules for the novices.'
Damena gives a book of rules for novices to Lexiane.
Lexiane says 'No, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Thank you, Aes Sedai.'
Damena arches an eyebrow.
Lexiane says 'I have read the rules for novices, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Have you now?'
Lexiane says 'But I appreciate the opportunity to read more!'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'And what does it say about respect for the Accepted?'
Damena gestures at the door with her hand.
The door silently swings shut and lock with a soft *click*.
Lexiane says 'I just read this section, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Well, I was reading it. Then I fell asleep.'
Mariah stands off to the side of the desk, in the background.
Lexiane says 'Dishes make me tired, Aes Sedai.'
Damena waves her hand. 'I do not care for your excuses.'
Lexiane says 'The first section was that I will use their title when addressing them, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Some Accepted don't like that so I stopped doing it but Accepted Mariah reminded me, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena clasps her hands behind her back, and shifts from one foot to another, her expression grave as she listens.
Mariah rolls her eyes at the mention of multiple stacks of dishes.
Lexiane says 'So I do owe her, and you, an apology for forgetting that first rule, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Second, I must obey Accepted that are assigned as my instructor, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah says 'Are any Accepted not assigned to your instruction, Novice Lexiane?'
Lexiane says 'Those are the only pertinent rules in the Handbook, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Accepted and Aes Sedai are your superiors, novice.'
Lexiane says 'Aes Sedai, may I answer Accepted Mariah's question? She is speaking out of turn.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'But the handbook says I must obey only Accepted assigned as my instructor.'
Lexiane says 'Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Then I am formally assigning each and every Accepted to be your instructor.'
Lexiane says 'That seems like quite a few instructors, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'It seems you could benefit from quite a bit of education.'
Lexiane says 'May I have a list of courses and classes, Aes Sedai?'
Damena says 'You may not.'
Lexiane says 'Tell me, Aes Sedai, what am I to do when I receive conflicting directions from the Accepted?'
Damena says 'You may seek me out personally.'
Lexiane says 'I have received quite a few different directives, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Then it seems that the Accepted may also need better education.'
Lexiane nods, the half of her hair not shaved bobbing.
Lexiane says 'Of course, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I am happy to seek you out for lessons!'
Lexiane positively beams.
Lexiane says 'Most Aes Sedai do not talk to me.'
Mariah raises her eyebrows.
Damena says 'I have the first lesson for you, and that is in cleanliness.'
Lexiane says 'They send Accepted to talk to me sometimes.'
Damena says 'First, you will clean this plague of frogs.'
Lexiane says 'Do you want me to kill the frogs, Aes Sedai?'
Damena says 'I expect you to use your sense to get rid of them.'
Damena says 'I'm sure they did not show up here by happenstance.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'When you are finished with the frogs, you are to finish the dishes.'
Lexiane says 'Please let me know if there is anything else I can do, Aes Sedai!'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane smiles happily.
Damena says 'However, I believe there is something underlying the issues at hand.'
Damena says 'You mentioned that you are getting conflicting rules from the Accepted?'
Mariah adds 'You may need to be specific with this Novice, on what you mean by 'Finish the dishes', Aes Sedai. The sink is to be empty?
Aelrena smiles briefly, her face smoothing out almost as soon as the expression forms.
Lexiane mouths 'Wow' at Mariah interrupting and instructing the Aes Sedai.
Mariah looks at Lexiane archly.
Lexiane whispers something to Aelrena.
Damena pinches Lexiane's ear.
Lexiane winces.
Damena says 'You may communicate with the entire room.'
Aelrena levels a stare at Lexiane, her expression darkening.
Lexiane emits a strangled, 'Ow, Aes Sedai!'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I was saying that Accepted Mariah was very bossy, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena nods in agreement.
Lexiane says 'She was correcting even you, Aes Sedai!'
Lexiane stands on tip toes to try and alleviate the pressure on her ear.
Damena lets go of the novice's ear.
Lexiane settles back on her heels and rubs her ear.
Damena says 'Accepted Mariah, please clarify the comment you were making.'
Mariah says 'I was providing a recommendation, Aes Sedai, based off of my experiences in the kitchens, which precipitated this meeting.'
Damena nods curtly towards Mariah.
Mariah says 'I noticed that if you aren't very clear with this Novice, she will make her own determination and claim ambiguity as why she is not in fault.'
Damena says ''Novice, please clarify the conflicting rules you are getting from the Accepted?'
Lexiane says 'Of course, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I have received many conflicting rules from Accepted.'
Lexiane says 'First is whether or not to address Accepted as Accepted, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Many say there is no need for a title, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Accepted Mariah is the first Accepted to tell me I had to use her title, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah glances as Aelrena.
Damena raises her finger.
Damena says 'You should use the title unless instructed not to by a specific Accepted.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Then you may forego that Accepted's title. And ONLY that Accepted's title.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Damena purses her lips. 'Summarize what I just said to you about that rule.'
Lexiane says 'I should use the title unless I am instructed not to use it for a specific Accepted, then I am to only not use it for that specific Accepted.'
Damena says 'Very good.'
Damena says 'Has there been other confusion?'
Aelrena nods in satisfaction at the Novice's response.
Lexiane says 'Not that comes to mind, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah fills a glass with a clear liquid from a tall bottle on a stand, and offers it to Damena Sedai.
Lexiane bellows 'Chloro Sedai, I am with Damena Sedai.'
Lexiane bellows 'That's why I am still in the Tower, Aes Sedai.'
Damena looks from one Accepted to the other.
Lexiane says 'I apologize for yelling, Damena Sedai.'
Mariah covers her ears at the loud yelling.
Lexiane says 'There were too many conversations, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena shakes her head.
Damena says 'Are you satisfied that she understands?'
Aelrena nods at Damena.
Lexiane says 'I was not sure who to answer to, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Or were there other matters at hand?'
Aelrena says 'i believe that covered the issues that I witnessed, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah says 'There was the question of Novices drinking wine, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena says 'Ah, yes. That.'
Lexiane says 'Oh yes, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Accepted Mariah made up rules, Aes Sedai.'
Damena puts her fists on her hips.
Lexiane says 'Or informed me of rules that do not exist anywhere, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah says 'She mentioned it isn't a written rule, but I know that I would be strung up as an Accepted had I encouraged her to continue drinking as I saw it.'
Damena bends down to look the Novice in the eyes.
Lexiane says 'Then we talked about how some rules aren't real rules because believing in them is what matters, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane grows silent as Damena enters her personal space.
Damena says 'Neither you nor any other initiate of the Tower is to drink any alcoholic beverages.'
Lexiane says 'Aes Sedai can't drink alcohol?'
Mariah blinks her eyes innocently.
Damena says 'An initiate is an underling, child.'
Damena says 'Aes Sedai may do as they wish.'
Lexiane says 'Oh, I thought it meant someone who was a member of an organization.'
Lexiane says 'Like Aes Sedai are members of the White Tower.'
Lexiane says 'Having been initiated into the White Tower, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'If, one day, the Pattern finds you fit to wear the shawl, you may drink yourself sloppy.'
Damena says 'But until then, you are not to drink.'
Lexiane says 'Ok, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I apologize for breaking the rule I did not know existed, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena chuckles slightly before covering it with a hand, playing the laugh off as a small cough.
Lexiane says 'Are there any rules that only exist when someone tells Damena about them, Aes Sedai?'
Mariah says 'That is why I brought it up, Novice Lexiane. Yet you dismissed me trying to instruct you. I wasn't even punishing you.'
Lexiane says 'Any other rules, I mean, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Who brought you into the Tower, Novice?'
Lexiane says 'It was a traveling Aes Sedai, Aes Sedai. I never learned her name, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'You should have been better taught, unfortunately, and I will not hold that against you.'
Lexiane says 'Thank you, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'That you are already a wearied novice and apparently have little grasp of the rules is concerning.'
Lexiane says 'I understand the rules very well, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Just not the rules that aren't written down and no one has told me, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Well, I am telling you now, so I expect that you will have no trouble following these rules.'
Lexiane says 'Of course, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Any rules explained to me by an Aes Sedai I will follow to the best of my ability, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah stares at the sky.
Damena glowers.
Aelrena shakes her head.
Lexiane says 'Did I say something wrong, Aes Sedai?'
Damena says 'Who are your instructors, novice?'
Lexiane says 'Aes Sedai and Accepted, Aes Sedai.'
Aelrena mutters under her breath "So close."
Damena says 'Then who can explain the rules to you?'
Lexiane says 'Will the Accepted be teaching me things, Aes Sedai?'
Lexiane says 'I think anyone can, Aes Sedai. And if they disagree I am supposed to contact you, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Yes. Rules, for one.'
Lexiane says 'I thought I knew all the rules, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'But apparently there are rules we don't write down!'
Lexiane says 'Could one of the Accepted write me a list of all of the rules, Aes Sedai?'
Damena says 'The Accepted are much too busy for that.'
Lexiane says 'Yes, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane looks down glumly.
Mariah says 'Aes Sedai, may I?'
Damena nods towards Mariah.
Mariah says 'Not write a list of all rules, but to try to explain the command structure.'
Lexiane says 'There is no command structure listed anywhere in the Handbook, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I thought command structure was for military organizations, Aes Sedai!'
Mariah says 'Perfect example of what I am about to cover.'
Lexiane says 'Are we in the army now, Aes Sedai?'
Damena holds one hand parallel to the ground. 'The Aes Sedai are at the top.'
Lexiane says 'I would not like to have joined an army, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I think armies are mean things, used mostly to hurt other people Aes Sedai.'
Damena holds her other hand far below the first. 'The Accepted are below the Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I'd like to stay totally out of an army, Aes Sedai.'
Damena moves her first hand almost to the floor. 'And the novices are at the bottom.'
Lexiane says 'My da served in the army and he said that it was the worst thing that ever happened to him, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah says 'You see, not everything will be completely laid out cleanly in a list of rules for you.'
Aelrena arches an eyebrow.
Lexiane says 'He said that the army is where you go to die inside and then you spend your life hacking weeds on a farm and the only thing you can see when you close your eyes are the men who hurt you and who you hurt, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah says 'For someone who was chastising me for speaking out of turn, is talking quite a bit.'
Damena says 'The White Tower is not an army, and as you should see in that book I just loaned you, you will not be leaving the White Tower until we decide that you should leave.'
Lexiane claps a hand over her mouth.
Lexiane delivers a muffled, 'I apologize, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Do you have any questions for me, novice?'
Lexiane's hand is still pressed over her mouth as she replies, 'No, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Then I believe you have a plague of frogs to deal with.'
Damena says 'You are dismissed.'
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Lexiane says 'Frogs and horses you said, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane says 'The door is locked, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane says 'Yep, locked.'
Lexiane says 'Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane coughs loudly.
Lexiane tries to open the carveddoor, but can't.
Lexiane tries the door handle a few more times.
Damena arches an eyebrow.
Damena says 'I mentioned nothing about horses'
Lexiane says 'Oh, that was maybe Chloro Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I am sorry Damena Sedai.'
Damena smirks.
Lexiane says 'Two conversations.'
Damena gestures with her hand.
The door smoothly swings open.
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Lexiane leaves south.
Aelrena stares at the sky.
Mariah remains dutifully silent, still standing alongside a bookcase.
Aelrena says 'Thank you for your time and help with that, Damena Sedai.'
Damena gestures at the door with her hand.
The warder leaves south.
The door silently swings shut and lock with a soft *click*.
Damena says 'Light hope this overly literal novice finds her way.'
Mariah says 'I fear for her chances if she will only listen to an Aes Sedai's direct commands.'
Aelrena says 'I'm afraid that unless everything is laid out for her in total, she's going to flounder for not being able to understand what hasn't been said directly.'
Aelrena shakes her head.
Mariah says 'Aerlena, thank you for your support there. It was appreciated to see that my viewpoint was shared.'
Damena says 'She does seem to have trouble with any sort of abstract thought.'
Aelrena says 'You're always welcome however I'm able to help, though I'm sorry I couldn't be more so.'
Damena says 'I hope the two of you can keep an eye out for her and guide her.'
Damena gestures with her hand.
The door smoothly swings open.
The warder has arrived from the south.
Aelrena says 'I will keep an eye out for her and helps as much as I am able, Damena Sedai.'
Aelrena smiles happily.
Mariah says 'Of course, Aes Sedai.'
Mariah curtseys before Damena.
Mariah leaves south.
Damena nods curtly.
Aelrena curtseys before Damena.
Aelrena leaves south.
– I saw Lexiane in the Red Ajah quarters, so I decided to make sure she was doing what I asked. –
Den of the Red Ajah
This room reflects the cool nature of the Red Ajah, the furnishings just as
severe as the rest of the room. A gilded chair rests near the center of the
room, accompanied by an equally elaborate dark wooden desk. Chairs have
been drawn up to the tall, arched windows, which look over the western side
of Tar Valon, the western bank of the Erinin and Dragonmount beyond,
serving as a constant reminder of the purpose of the Red Ajah.

Lexiane says 'And the frogs, Aes Sedai.'
Damena says 'Lead them out of the Tower.'
Lexiane says 'Oh.'
Damena says 'Were you raised by wolves?'
Lexiane says 'I don't think my da was a wolf, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'Though sometimes he said war turns men into wolves, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Lexiane says 'I will go take care of the frogs then, Aes Sedai!'
Lexiane says 'Am I dismissed, Aes Sedai?'
Damena says 'I fear those, you will have to kill.'
Lexiane nods in agreement.
Damena holds one finger up. 'Lead out the horses.'
Lexiane nods in agreement.
Damena holds a second finger up. 'Kill the frogs.'
Lexiane says 'I will kill the horses outside the Tower, Aes Sedai.'
Lexiane says 'I understand the mess.'
Lexiane curtseys gracefully.
Damena says 'There is no need to kill the horses.'
Lexiane leaves east.

A shaggy brown mare is dead! R.I.P.
Damena's blood freezes as you hear a shaggy brown mare's death cry.
Damena says 'Child, what in the Light are you doing?'
Lexiane says 'Chloro Sedai tasked me with getting rid of the horses, Aes Sedai.'
Damena scrubs her hand through her hair and mutters under her breath.
