It does seem rather odd that section 5.1 of the Handbook says Sitter all over the place and 5.2 says "any Aes Sedai"

This log is leading me to realize there may be discrepancies in our advancement details. So far as I know, any Aes Sedai can advance any initiate to any rank. The only exception is that a Sitter is required to run the test for the shawl, and two are required to lead the ceremony to raise an Accepted to the shawl.

Meeting Katene

Summary: Novice Katene approaches Accepted Isela with questions about the Tower Handbook and Novice Advancement.

POV: Isela
Main Character: Katene
Special Guest: Lyla

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Well
This open-roofed building used to house the initiates of the Tower consists
of nine levels, but only three of them are currently in use. A number of
small, windowless rooms open up to a gallery which surrounds a courtyard,
there is ample fresh air. A fountain with a small garden sits at the bottom
of this well, the sound of falling waters echoing among the towering walls.
A chicken wanders around here, pecking at the ground.
Katene the Fledgling Novice is standing here.
A young girl in a plain white dress stands here.
Kennira, Caretaker of Novices tends to the boarding of her young charges.

Isela says 'You wanted to see me, Novice?'

Katene says 'Melosa Sedai commented during a meeting I had with her recently to have a conversation with an Accepted to go over the handbook basics.'

Isela nods in agreement.

Isela says 'You have had the orientation class from Accepted Maighan, correct?'

A novice leaves west.

Katene says 'I have Accepted.'

Isela says 'The full Handbook is available to you from the Tower Library (https://forums.wotmud.info/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=11425)'

Isela says 'We can go over the broad strokes.'

Katene nods in agreement.

Isela says 'Have you read the Handbook in its entirety?'

Katene says 'Yes Accepted. Several times in fact.'

Isela nods curtly. 'Then we shall skip to those areas you have questions over.'

Isela says 'Any concerns or questions with section 1?'

Katene says 'No'

Isela says 'The most important part I'd convey from section 1 to you is to not allow yourself to be caught in idleness.'

Isela says 'Tasks will be found for you.'

Katene says 'I guess my only questions would around the 3 Oaths and What the Tower represents.'

Katene says 'yes Accepted.'

Isela taps a finger to her lips.

Katene says 'I will explain.'

Isela says 'Go on.'

Katene says 'I was asked what I thought the Tower represents and which of the Oaths is more important.'

Isela nods, tilting her head.

Isela says 'And what do you think the Tower represents, Katene?'

The chamberdoor is opened from the other side.

Lyla has arrived from the east.

The chamberdoor closes quietly.

Lyla sits down and rests.

Lyla says 'Hello all'

Katene says 'Hello Accepted Lyla.'

Isela inclines her head in greeting to Lyla.

Katene says 'I believe it represents hope and guidance to the world. Without it, I think the world would fall into chaos with out the Tower and dark would run rampit.'

Katene says 'I believe this answer was found favorable.'

A novice has arrived from the west.

Isela gives a short nod. 'It is that, to be sure. But what about to those who are ignorant of the Tower and fearful of Aes Sedai? How would you explain it to them?'

Isela says 'There are those who would say that Aes Sedai are responsible for the chaos and darkness.'

Katene says 'hmm, yes interesting. I suppose it would go back to the 3 Oaths.'

A novice leaves west.

Katene says 'the 3 Oaths are the White Tower and the White Tower are the 3 Oaths. One cannot be without the other.'

Isela nods again. 'And which of the Oaths do you think is most important?'

Isela gives the Novice an assessing look.

Katene says 'They all are most important. They all play on one another. I see them now as a triangle. All 3 pieces are necessary to hold together. If one leg falls, it all falls.'

Isela says 'Indeed. It appears you've retained well what Melosa Sedai has taught. What then were your questions surrounding the Oaths and what the Tower represents?'

Katene thinks hard.

Katene says 'I think I understand the rest of it, I just wanted to make certain that the information is correct as I understood it.'

Isela nods in agreement.

Isela says 'Keep in mind that the world is large, and full of people with different perspectives.'

Isela says 'Likewise, the one spreading the tale may have a different answer than you.'

Katene nods in agreement.

Isela says 'For example, one of the Brown Ajah, when asked what the Tower represents, would probably start with its vast libraries and stores of knowledge.'

Isela says 'The White Tower has stood for thousands of years, and it means much to many, but each may have a slightly different answer to that question.'

Katene says 'I see. And so each Ajah would be a leg of the Tower, as each of the Oaths'

Isela nods in agreement.

Katene says 'and individually they may have "weighted" answers, but when put together, it adds up to the truth.'

Isela says 'I encourage you to seek out those of all the Ajahs. You must understand them all in order to gain the best perspective of what the White Tower truly represents.'

Katene nods in agreement.

Isela says 'That may be a better task for Lyla, but there's no harm in starting when you're a Novice.'

Isela winks suggestively at Lyla.

Lyla grins evilly.

Lyla says 'Indeed, it would probably make your Accepted interview go a lot easier'

Lyla says 'If you found a passion or calling with one of the Ajah as a Novice'

Katene says 'I have been visiting the Ajahs. Just today I spoke with Rafela Sedai, Kiruna Sedai and Romanda Sedai.'

A novice has arrived from the west.

Isela says 'Earlier, you mentioned that the rank of Wearied Novice seemed far off still to you. Why?'

Isela pins the Novice with a stare.

Katene says 'As I watch everyone leaving the Tower to fight, to research, to travel the world, it is daunting to remain here in the Tower, doing chores. It is an over exaggeration, but it feels I may never reach Accepted, let alone the Shawl as long as it has taken me to try to get to Wearied'

Isela strokes her chin thoughtfully.

Isela says 'How many merits do you have?'

Katene says 'I am down to 31.'

Katene says 'I've been taking advantage of the Wheels x3 and x5 with the lumberjack.'

Isela says 'That's plenty enough to advance to Wearied. And your answers during this conversation have impressed me. I'd say the only reason you aren't already there is because you don't believe in yourself.'

Isela says 'Take a little heart, have some courage, and approach an Aes Sedai, asking for an interview to advance.'

Isela says 'The initiative and persistence you show will take you far here.'

Katene says 'I had an interview with Melosa Sedai. It has taken me several days to fulfull the tasks she assigned me.'

Isela nods in agreement.

Isela says 'And they are now fulfilled?'

Katene says 'I believe after we have completed here, they will be.'

Isela nods in agreement.

Katene says 'Do you have any other suggestions on preparedness?'

Isela taps a finger to her lips again.

Isela says 'You say you've read the Handbook several times.'

Katene says 'Yes Accepted.'

Isela says 'What do you do if an enemy of the Tower attacks you inside the walls of Tar Valon?'

Katene says 'As a Novice, I need to get to a point where I may flee the battle. My best choice will be to flee to the Gaiden training grounds. Should that be overrun, I should flee to the Well or to Sheriam Sedai's office.'

Isela nods in agreement.

Isela says 'And what will happen to you if you are found using forbidden weaves?'

Katene says 'I will be brought in front of the Council and be either sent to the farm or more likely thrown out of the Tower all together.'

Isela adds 'And depending on the offense, you may be stilled.'

Katene nods in agreement.

Isela says 'In my opinion, you're ready to advance as a Novice. Seek out a Sitter and request an interview, and let them know of your interactions with Melosa Sedai and myself.'

Isela says 'My recommendation is to act as if you already hold the position for which you strive.'

Lyla nods at Isela.

Katene says 'Should I not go back to Melosa Sedai first?'

Isela says 'If Melosa Sedai has requested you bring proof of your tasks completion to her first, then of course. But Melosa Sedai is not a Sitter and cannot advance you herself.'

Katene nods in agreement.

A novice leaves west.

Katene says 'I did have some confusion about that. I source I read said Sitter and another said any Aes Sedai.'

Isela strokes her chin thoughtfully.

Lyla says 'A Sitter is required to advance you to Wearied Novice. Any Aes Sedai can interview you for Accepted'

Lyla says 'I remember having the same confusion'

Isela nods at Lyla.

Katene says 'Very good. Thank you for the clarification Accepted Lyla.'

Lyla says 'Oh, and if anyone asks you what it means to be a Wearied Novice, don't overthink it'

Isela says 'Are you familiar with the post system to send messages, Katene?'

Lyla says 'A Wearied Novice is just that, a wearied novice. You're accepting that the work only gets harder from here.'

Katene thinks hard.

Katene says 'I remember there was an in game post, but I have not used it recently.'

Isela says 'If you would like an unobtrusive way to contact a Sitter, you may consider sending them a message via pigeon.'

Isela says 'I can show you how to do it if you like.'

Katene says 'certainly. Thank you.'
