In the Classroom
A board of black slate hangs on the wall near the door, suggesting this
room is used as a classroom. The room is plain and windowless and has
enough place to seat thirty students. A dais with a desk sits at the front
of the room, where the Aes Sedai or Accepted teaching the class can sit.
Lorrah the Wearied Novice is sitting here.
Isela Adelwhin, Tower Accepted is standing here.
A haughty young woman strides by practicing Aes Sedai serenity.
Isela says 'I don't believe I've met either of you yet.'
Isela stares down first Lyla, then Lorrah.
Lorrah glances sharply at Isela.
Lyla says 'I don't think so either. Pleased to meet you'
Lorrah says 'Well met Accepted'
Isela says 'How long have you been in the Tower, girls?'
Lorrah thinks hard.
Lorrah says 'I can't remember to be honest. Time moves differently here it seems.'
Lyla says 'About... four years now?'
Someone knocks on the door from the other side.
Isela opens the door.
Vala has arrived from the west.
Isela closes the door.
Isela nods at Vala.
Vala says 'Mind if I join you?'
Isela says 'Not at all, Vala.'
Isela says 'Maybe we can show these Novices a thing or two together.'
Vala says 'Thank you. What's today's lesson?'
Isela says 'I was just getting to know them a bit.'
Vala nods in agreement.
Isela says 'It seems you both have been here some time. I expect you're both able to freely embrace
the Source?'
Lyla says 'I can, Accepted. Though I only know how to do a few things so far'
Lorrah nods in agreement.
Isela turns to Lyla. 'And what would you consider your greatest achievement thus far?'
Lyla says 'I assisted Tolza Sedai with a research project the other day.'
Vala smiles at Lyla.
Isela says 'I meant in the Power, child. What elements do you find an affinity toward?'
Lyla says 'I don't find any particularly easy or hard. Changing the weather was the first thing I
learned how to do. I'm a bit behind on the more practical weaves.'
Lyla says 'Oh, wait!'
Lyla says 'I pulled lightning down the other day and managed to strike a tree with it.'
Lorrah considers her answer carefully, forehead creasing.
Lyla says 'That was thrilling.'
Lorrah smiles at Lyla.
Lorrah clambers to her feet.
Lyla senses Lorrah connecting to the True Source.
Lyla senses Lorrah is channeling saidar.
Lorrah weaves her hands, creating a hearty meal in the process.
Isela arches an eyebrow. 'Impressive. And you Lorrah?'
Lorrah eats a strange fruit.
Vala says 'Excellent, I've not tried that myself.'
Lorrah nibbles on her fruit.
Lorrah says 'Um, before I put on white or while I've been a novice here?'
Isela adopts a bemused look. 'Why don't you tell me a bit of your background first.'
Lorrah says 'Well, after leaving Kandor to see some of the southlands I met someone who felt the
Power in me, and suggested I make my way here.'
Lorrah says 'And so I did. While on the way I did some activities at towns, which helped me grow as
a person.'
Lorrah nods to herself, she must need reassurance.
Isela taps a finger to her lips in thought.
Lorrah says 'While not as spectacular as Lyra's lighting bolt, I did manage to slay a dog somewhere
northeast of here for a scalp.'
Lorrah picks fruit out of her teeth.
Lorrah considers her answer carefully, forehead creasing.
Isela frowns.
Isela says 'I hope it was rabid. I am quite fond of dogs.'
Isela wipes her hands together briskly and walks to the chalkboard.
Lorrah says 'Ow yes, quite rabid. Since joining, I have learned a lot of new things including a
means of improving my armor-making it stronger somehow.'
Vala looks at Lorrah archly.
Isela nods at Lorrah.
Lorrah considers Vala with a steady gaze.
Vala says 'How did you manage that?'
Lorrah says 'Sheriam Sedai showed me. She says I have an affinity in Earth'
Lorrah says 'With your permission Accepted?'
Vala nods in agreement.
Lyla senses Lorrah connecting to the True Source.
Lyla senses Lorrah is channeling saidar.
Lorrah fails to pull together whatever flows she was trying to weave.
Lyla senses Lorrah connecting to the True Source.
Lyla senses Lorrah is channeling saidar.
Lorrah forms a beautiful weave of white light about Lorrah's body.
Vala says 'Nicely done, Novice Lorrah.'
Lorrah flexes, armor rattling.
Lorrah says 'Thank you Accepted.'
Isela frowns.
Isela says 'Well, normally given your backgrounds I'd run a more basic course on the five elements
of the One Power.'
Isela says 'But after that display, perhaps we should open it up a bit to answer your questions
about advancing in the Tower?'
Lorrah smiles happily.
Lorrah says 'That would be most helpful, thanks you.'
Lyla nods in agreement.
Isela says 'Lorrah, that warding is one of the more advanced weaves known to the Tower. I'm
surprised Sheriam Sedai taught you so early.'
Lorrah picks more fruit out of her teeth, frowning.
Lorrah says 'I must say, I prefer meat. Less messy.'
Vala says 'That reminds me, congratulations to Novice Lyla on ranking up recently. Well done.'
Lyla smiles happily.
Lorrah hugs Lyla.
Isela says 'Given your interest and apparent talent there, I assume you are interested in the fight
against the Shadow?'
Lorrah nods in agreement.
Isela says 'Lyla, what about you?'
Isela looks at Lyla.
Lyla says 'I haven't decided yet. I'm mostly just nervous about the test to become an Accepted'
Isela gives a short nod.
Isela says 'Let's start there then.'
Vala nods at Lyla.
Isela says 'What do you think it means to be an Accepted, Lyla?'
Lyla says 'It means that you're on the path to becoming an Aes Sedai. You've committed yourself to the
Tower, instead of the life you could've lived outside of it'
Isela nods. 'Anything to add, Lorrah?'
Lorrah taps her tooth with a fingernail as she forms her answer.
Lorrah says 'It means you are ready to take on more responsibility, and are trusted more to look
after both yourself and novices.'
Isela says 'Very good, Novices. With that responsibility, you'll get more freedom to pursue
specialized study, eventually apprenticing to one of the seven Ajahs.'
Lorrah scribbles a few notes on her pad.
Vala says 'Commitment, and trustworthiness. Both solid answers.'
Isela says 'As for the test itself to become Accepted, no one will ask you what you experienced
within, but know that you'll face your greatest fears.'
Lorrah looks back steadily, face set in determination.
Isela says 'On a more practical level, the arches are a ter'angreal. Which one of you can explain
what a ter'angreal is?'
Lyla looks at Lorrah.
Lorrah thinks hard.
Lyla says 'I know they use the One Power, but I don't know how they work.'
Lorrah says 'I believe, speaking to Verin Sedai, it is an object for channeling the one power for a
specific purpose.'
Isela nods at Lyla.
Vala says 'A crystal lightstick might be the most accessible example. You may have seen them
before.'
Lorrah says 'Some require an affinity in the power to work, others don't.'
Lorrah nods at Vala.
Isela says 'Good answers, both of you. They are objects of the One Power, and are used for a
specific purpose. However, some of them may not require a channeler to be used at all.'
Lorrah nods at Isela.
Lorrah scribbles a few notes on her pad.
Isela says 'The making of them was lost long ago, so we may never know the original purpose for the
arches used in the Acceptance test.'
Lorrah ponders life, the universe, and everything.
Isela says 'They serve their new purpose now, but since they are objects of the Power, know that
channeling inside is very dangerous.'
Isela nods at Vala.
Isela says 'A crystal lightstick is an excellent example of a ter'angreal that someone with no
channeling ability at all can use.'
Isela mutters 'though they should all be turned in to the Tower when found.'
Lorrah considers her answer carefully, forehead creasing.
Lorrah nods in agreement.
Isela says 'One other note about ter'angreals before we move on: sometimes ter'angreals used in
proximity of one another can react. Don't play around with them, or ever channel into them, should
you find one.'
Isela says 'Turn it in to an Aes Sedai.'
Lyla nods in agreement.
Isela says 'Lyla, what else about the Accepted test has you nervous?'
Lyla says 'I've heard that... some girls disappear. And they don't come back.'
Lorrah frowns.
Vala says 'That is, fortunately, an extremely rare occurrence.'
Isela nods grimly.
Vala says 'You will not be put to the Arches test until an Aes Sedai is convinced you're fully ready
to face it.'
Isela says 'Do as you're instructed, and be steadfast. I won't say it's not a possibility, but if
you're ready, you'll do fine.'
Lorrah nods at Isela.
Vala says 'Nobody enters unprepared, therefore the risk is greatly mitigated.'
Isela nods at Vala.
Lorrah considers all the points made in the lesson.
Isela says 'You'll be given the opportunity to refuse the test, but only twice. Upon the third,
you'll be sent out of the Tower.'
Isela says 'Once you begin the test, you must continue on to the end.'
Isela says 'Use your time as a Novice to prepare yourself well for this task. A lot will be expected
of you as an Accepted, and the arches test is there to confirm you're ready.'
Lyla nods at her.
Lorrah considers her place in the pattern.
Isela says 'Any other questions, girls? I am running short on time now.'
Isela places the unused bit of chalk back on the tray, then wipes her hands together.
Lyla shakes her head.
Lorrah says 'No, thank you both. Your lesson has been most instructive.'
Lyla says 'Yes. Thank you both.'
Isela says 'Dismissed then, Novices. Off you go.'
