Nori had been a Wearied Novice in the White Tower for almost a year. The addition of new chores, extra study hours, and practicing her offensive weaves in the nearby forest were consuming her days as they turned into nights. Her passion for hard work and need to show others that she was growing from this journey shined brightly in her daily routine. Although there were times when she longed for friends of old, family members, and the comforts of home she pressed on and made sure to keep her thoughts under control and quietly to herself, her main focus being on chores and her studies and held outwardly as such to those around her. She had never met an Aes Sedai that felt sorry for herself, so she decided that she too would take a vow of maturity and with it a face that appeared more stern and deliberate in her actions. Nori was becoming not only a quality example of what it mean to be a Wearied Novice, but maturing as a woman of the White Tower.
She had made a commitment to become an Aes Sedai, and she was determined to see it through despite arriving as a happy go luck soul, someone whose favorite past time was taking running leaps into the creek with friends and laughing so hard it hurt before donning the robes of a Novice for the first time. She no longer went barefoot wherever she pleased and her appearance was well groomed before ever leaving the dormitory. She did not steal bread nor did she tell jokes with the other Novices, even when there were good ones to tell. Time and purpose had collided with the Nori of old and what was once normal behavior had been packed away somewhere deep inside what was quickly becoming a more mature woman. Perhaps a time and a place for everything, but now was not the time. When she was summoned to a lesson on the Three Oaths, she put on a brave face , straightened her dress, and made her way to the classroom with an heir of confidence in her heart.
The Three Oaths were a crucial part of being an Aes Sedai. They were a set of vows that every sister had to swear upon being raised to the shawl, and they bound them for life. Nori had studied these as part of her new daily routine and they were kept in heavy rotation in event she were to be quizzed by Aes Sedai or Accepteds. In preparation, she had spent many a hour writing the oaths out in pamphlets of paper and exploring what each oath meant and how Aes Sedai and those who were bound to those oaths must behave as a result.
A tall ageless face of an Aes Sedai met her at the door of the classroom. Curtseying to the Aes Sedai she hurried inside and found her normal seat towards the front of the classroom and began preparing her desk. A tiny quilled pen freshly dipped in dark black ink and a fresh piece of paper sat neatly before her as she prepared for class to begin. The classroom dorms closed behind the tall Aes Sedai as she seemed to float inside the classroom and elegantly taking her place at the helm of the desks, facing Nori and other Novices. As the lesson began, Nori listened carefully as the Mistress of Novices explained the Three Oaths in detail.
The first oath was "to speak no word that is not true". The Mistress of Novices explained in detail how one may circle the truth, but never lie. An example was requested which Nori obliged, raising her hand high and first among a crowd of quiet and nervous peers. "An example, would be if an enemy of the White Tower asked of her business, she would not be lying if she merely said her business was of her own, even if her business might entail greater details", answered Nori. The gaze of the Mistress of Novices studied Nori for a moment before nodding agreeing. "I did not detect a lie in that scenario, although it was not as descript as the person asking the question may have hoped for, Thank you Nori", responded the Mistress of Novices.
The second oath was "to make no weapon with which one man may kill another". Nori had heard of a time long ago when channelers could harden and hone weapons using the one power. Although she did not raise her hand to broach the subject, she did find herself wondering if that would have been against the rules given what she knew about this oath. She decided in her mind that she would not have imbued any weapon with the one power if it were up to her, for what it was worth. The lesson continued as Sheriam, the Mistress of Novices continued to discuss the third oath.
With great power, comes great responsibility. This is why we have the third oath, "Never to use the One Power as a weapon except against Darkfriends or Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme defense of her life, the life of her Warder, or another Aes Sedai". Sheriam turned to the class after chalking the third and final oath they would all be bound to at some point in their journey and discussed openly the reason for harnessing the one power responsibly. Sheriam briefly discussed those that had been corrupted by the dark one and broke this oath bringing great threats to those of not only the White Tower but, the Light as a whole. After instilling the fear and wrath of the White Tower into all of the participants in the classroom Sheriam released the classroom, leaving all of the students with lingering affects.
Nori made her way towards the doors of the classroom, shuffling single file behind other Novices before a soft voice of the teacher caught her ears. "Nori, a moment please before you go", replied Sheriam from her position at the head of the classroom. Nori spun on her heel made her way back towards the front of the classroom, going against the flow of foot traffic as her peers filed out of the double doors now behind her. "Nori, I wanted to have a word with you about your studies lately", replied Sheriam. "Aes Sedai have eyes and ears everywhere girl, and know that people are taking notice of your willingness to exhibit what you have learned" responded the Mistress of Novices, almost allowing what looked like a tiny small to creep across her ageless face. "Laras tells me you've been busy in the kitchens, I've heard of your green thumb in the gardens, and you're quite present in the classroom as of late, impressive growth you are showing" replied Sheriam. Nori could feel her face burning as she tried not to blush, thanking Sheriam for her complement and dismissing as quickly as she was summoned. Nori tried to catch her breath as soon as she was out of sight.
Nori made her way through the halls onto her next task, a stop by the garden before breaking for lunch. Nori's thoughts drifted back to the three oaths and why they were so important, imaging what the oath rod looked like in person as she had never seen it before. Other thoughts concerning what they had covered in the class room filled her mind as she turned down the ramp of the stairs towards the gardens. Nori knew that the Oaths were necessary to know, to practice, and eventually to be bound by. They were what made the Aes Sedai respected and trusted by people all over the world. Nori felt inspired by this concept and desired to be respected not only by her peers, but outwardly by the rest of the world in pursuit of knowledge and growth at the White Tower. She had mentally prepared herself to live by the oaths until she took her vow under the oath road herself. She would be a living example of such until that day came, so that she would have the practice and conviction of a more mature member of the White Tower, and it would make her a better Wearied Novice for it.
