Tempering Fears

by Chloro » Sat Apr 08, 2023 6:39 pm

Chloro and Sarinda put a young wearied novice to the test, as she attempts to move up in the tower. First you must learn your fears, then you must find the strength to overcome them. Either you will bend, or you will break.

View of: Chloro
Participants: Chloro, Sarinda, Jannelia

Meeting Room of the Gray Ajah
Large, leaded glass windows surround the room on all sides, save the
southern where a large doorway leads out into a antechamber. The room
itself is dominated by a large wooden table around which sits at least
fifty matching chairs, something close to a record for the White Tower. In
the middle of the table are an assortment of unused parchments, quill pens
and stoppered ink jars. A small stand off to one side of the room holds a
large number of glass cups and a large pitcher of chilled water. An
inscription in fine lettering is etched upon the windows.

Zone: White Tower Upper Floors
Door east: door
A chair made of red oak rests next to the table. [4]
A large round table built from black oak dominates the center of the room.
Sarinda din Rovan is standing here.
A silver-haired Aes Sedai sits here, reading.
A Gray Sister walks here, considering her options.
Annoura Larisen is here, weighing your words.

Annoura Larisen says 'I shall consult with Alyssa the scribe on this matter.'

Annoura Larisen leaves for a moment, then returns.

Annoura Larisen says 'Jannelia has the potential for advancement.'

Chloro arches an eyebrow.

Chloro says 'We shall see about that.'

Chloro says 'Annoura summon Jannelia please.'

Annoura Larisen says 'I will send my scribe to summon her, Chloro.'

Chloro says 'Thank you Sister.'

Sarinda says 'I will defer to your lead in this matter, sister.'

The carveddoor is opened from the other side.

Jannelia has arrived from the east.

Chloro says 'Thank you Sarinda.'

Jannelia curtseys gracefully.

Chloro arches an eyebrow.

Chloro gestures at the doors with her hand.

The door silently swings shut and locks with a soft *click*.

Jannelia says 'I was told you wanted to see me Chloro Sedai.'

Sarinda looks at Jannelia.

Chloro says 'Child it is customary to knock before entering.'

Jannelia blushes.

Sarinda's ageless face is stoic.

Jannelia stammers "My apologies Chloro Sedai."

Chloro motions to the large round table and moves to her high-backed chair on the south-west bend. "Please all be seated and comfortable."

Sarinda smiles happily.

Sarinda inclines her head to you.

Sarinda sits down on a stout oaken chair.

Jannelia sits down on a stout oaken chair.

Chloro says 'Novice Jannelia, do you know why you have been summoned this night?'

Jannelia says 'I believe it is in regards to possibly being considered to advance to Accepted, though I may be mistaken.'

Sarinda draws a dagger nonchalantly from a small fold in her cloak and trims a fingernail.

Chloro looks to the girl, gray eyes weighing and measuring her as she speaks. "That is correct child, now it has not escaped me that we come from the same homeland. Borderlanders are determined, stalwart, and a tad stubborn in my personal experience. Can you tell me what the price of becoming Accepted is?"

Jannelia says 'I am unsure of the price. I do know that to become Accepted I am to be tested and face my fears Chloro Sedai.'

Jannelia begins to look nervous but attempts to school her features smooth.

Chloro meets the girl’s gaze, eye to eye her own gray eyes piercing as she speaks. "To become Accepted is to further bind yourself to tower and give up any other life you could have had. Children, marriage, quiet life, none of these are afforded to Aes Sedai. Are you so sure that you are willing to pay that price?"

Jannelia says 'I am Chloro Sedai, as I believe that to become Aes Sedai is well worth the sacrifice.'

Sarinda's face remains stoic as she stows the dagger and folds her hands on the table before her. 'If it pleases the Light, how many Accepted have you had the opportunity to speak with since joining the White Tower?'

Jannelia sits a bit taller in her seat, looking resolute.

Jannelia says 'I have only had the chance to speak with three so far. Accepted Bena, Accepted Nori, and Accepted Navari.'

Sarinda draws down her thin eyebrows into a frown.

Sarinda says 'Nori? She is a novice like you, child, unless you are thinking of someone else.'

Jannelia blushes.

Jannelia says 'I am sorry for my mistake Sarinda Sedai. Then I have only spoken with two Accepted.

Chloro says 'What Aes Sedai have you spoken with or requested lessons from Child?'

Jannelia says 'Chloro Sedai I have had a sparing lesson with Sarinda Sedai, a classroom lesson with yourself, and a lesson with Aelrena Sedai before I was raised to Wearied Novice.'

Chloro looks to Sarinda then back to the novice as she folds her hands on the table. "I will be frank with you Jannelia, though you have the strength in channeling ability to progress, and the merits. Hard work goes hand in hand with relations and intricacy here."

Sarinda nods thoughtfully.

Chloro allows a moment for her statement to sink in before continuing. "I have reviewed your file and known interactions so far. While your merits are in order your exposure is lacking. You seek to be judged by a sisterhood that you have met very few in. It would be an error in my judgment to consider you ready to proceed. The south is unlike our ways in the north. Here being seen and the bonds you develop are also just as important."

Chloro says 'So far you have named three Sisters, Asandra Sedai who inducted you counts as a fourth. I will require an assignment from you. If you still wish to petition for the Arches.'

Jannelia nods at Chloro Sedai's words "I will make a point to organize appointments with other Aes Sedai and Accepted."

Sarinda says 'Child, we have a report here from Sheriam that states you have been very diligent in your chores and your studies. You have already earned many merits, as many as most Accepted. You are not lacking in behavior consistent with your station.'

Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, child, from these interactions you have had with other Accepted and with Aes Sedai, tell us some of the things that you have learned so far about the White Tower and your place within it.'

Chloro nods to Sarinda awaiting the child's response.

Jannelia says 'Sarinda Sedai, I have learned much during my time here in the White Tower. Firstly I learned more about the nature of the One Power and my connection to it. Previously I had been misled by my father and thought it was somehow a sign of evil. This has been proven time and again to be a falsehood.'

Sarinda nods decisively.

Jannelia says 'I have been able to learn much of the One Power and of the responsibility we have, not only in wielding the power but also as individuals to help guide others to better understanding.'

Jannelia says 'There is so much in the world that is misunderstood and learning about some of this from in my studies at the library and with Aelrena Sedai there seem to be no end to the knowledge in the world. It is now my hope to help bring this knowledge to bear when talking with others to help them gain understanding as well.'

Chloro listens to the novice taking in her words, gray eyes scanning for changes in body language or signs of strain.

Jannelia says 'I feel my family experience has weighed on my greatly as it had me fearing for my very life and believing I had no hope. This is unacceptable that there is the possibility of other children in the world being fed the same lies and treading the same path of misunderstanding.'

Sarinda nods and smiles slightly. 'These are important lessons, both now and for the future. The One Power is a powerful tool, child, a gift that we women bear. And yet it is only one of the tools available to us as Aes Sedai. If it pleases the Light, the White Tower will help you to master both your understanding of the One Power, but also of how to find your place in the world so you can give hope and light to so many.'

Jannelia says 'I learned that while the One Power is dangerous, it is also glorious and must be understood and trained to help remove the danger.'

Chlor says 'The mind, untrained can be just as dangerous if misled as you have experienced.'

Jannelia takes a breath to reign in her rising passion.

Chloro looks to Sarinda to see if she is satisfied with the girl’s answer.

Jannelia says 'Yes, my father never understood anything of Aes Sedai and as such was easily swayed by the words of a Child of Light.'

Jannelia says 'While he is not a mean-spirited man, his lack of understanding made him easily mis-led.'

Chloro says 'Though your past was hard Jannelia, you can rest easy in the fact that you were not found to have almost made a weapon with the one power in front of a Kandori Queen. '

Jannelia says 'As it stands now, I doubt I could ever return home. Though I do hope that I might be able to help him understand the true nature of the world and see how the Children of Light have skewed things.'

Chloro says 'We all have pasts and burdens from them to bear. However, the more we speak to them, the more bonds we develop, the easier those burdens are to shoulder. '

Jannelia nods at Chloro Sedai's words.

Chloro says 'We live far longer than most others, the bonds you develop here may out last all others. Take this to heart in the coming days.'

Sarinda says 'Child, I wish to reiterate that I am pleased with all of my interactions with you so far. You are at the beginning of a long but rewarding journey.'

Jannelia says 'Thank you Sarinda Sedai.'

Chloro says 'If Sarinda Sedai has no further questions I will give you an assignment.'

Jannelia says 'I am at your service Chloro Sedai.'

Sarinda says 'If it pleases the Light, I have a comment, and a question.'

Chloro nods and yields to her Red Sister.

Jannelia looks at Sarinda Sedai expectantly.

Sarinda says 'As I said, I find no fault in your actions so far, and our interactions have been pleasing. But especially with the current state of affairs in the world, when forces are at work to threaten the peace that the White Tower has strived so hard to support, we cannot afford to advance anyone through the Arches until we have confidence that she will truly be ready to be a representative to the world at large.'

Sarinda says 'This is why we are requesting further efforts to establish more relationships, to meet with more Accepted and inquire about their experiences, and to seek out Aes Sedai for direct instruction and tasks. It is to ensure that you are properly prepared for what lies next.'

Annoura Larisen says 'You are not Gray Ajah.'

Sarinda chuckles politely.

Jannelia nods at Sarinda.

Chloro looks to Annoura, "your powers of observation astound me sister."

Sarinda says 'My question is this. What is something you fear, deeply and truly?'

Jannelia says 'I will make a concerted effort to make sure that I am awake when other members of the Tower are awake as well.'

Jannelia blanches and looks uncomfortable.

Jannelia says 'Sarinda Sedai...'

Sarinda nods expectantly.

Jannelia says 'I believe that in my heart of hearts, my greatest fear is that there is the barest shred of truth to my father’s words. That I am tainted and have no say in this.'

Jannelia face crumples at her own statement.

Jannelia blinks away unshed tears.

Sarinda leans forward, eyes trained sharply on the novice. 'You will face your fears three times within the Arches. The ter'angreal will not relent and will not let you avoid them. If it pleases the Light, you must search yourself and prepare to face your fears, and the power they hold. And then you must learn to accept and move beyond them.'

Jannelia takes a shuddering breath as she listens to Sarinda Sedai's last words.

Sarinda says 'If it is the possibility of corruption you fear, or of powerlessness in the face of overwhelming adversity, the Red Ajah has much it could teach you about how to overcome these fears.'

Chloro softens slightly, sympathy entwined in her voice. "This child is why you are not ready, when you begin there is no end until the test is completed, or until you are no more. Not every girl emerges and joins the ranks of the Accepted. Many have not come back to us."

Sarinda draws down her thin eyebrows into a frown.

Sarinda nods solemnly.

Sarinda adds, 'And yet, I think you could be ready sooner than you know, Jannelia, as long as you have courage and grit. We shall see.

Chloro allows her last statement to sink in before speaking.

Jannelia says 'I have been working to overcome these fears, and while I do believe what I have been taught I don't know how to squelch the nagging voice in the back of my mind saying that I am wrong.'

Chloro says 'For now, your request to advance is denied. However, when you have spoken with two more Sedai that you have not interacted with yet (post-able logs) and one Accepted on what it means to be Accepted (post-able log) I will expect a missive for this to be reviewed again. This is not a no; it is a request for more seasoning.'

Jannelia says 'Thank you Chloro Sedai. I will work on this as well as get additional input on my particular fear from other Aes Sedai. I feel I do a good job of pushing the thoughts down but wonder if there is a better way to handle them.'

Sarinda says 'I also would be glad to offer you various tasks that you can work on independently in case other Aes Sedai are not available for a lesson or to meet with you.'

Jannelia says 'I thank you both for your time talking with me this evening.'

Chloro says 'Before you go.'

Chloro says 'I find I must remind Novices and Accepted that though Sisters may not be seen in the halls, they can often be reached by missive (forum mail). The Ajah rosters (view clan "Color") will show sisters in possible residence. Use this to your advantage.'

Jannelia nods in agreement.

Jannelia says 'I will do this Chloro Sedai'

Chloro says 'As a final statement, you are from my homeland child, as such I will expect great things from you. There are not many sisters from Kandor currently. Know that I will be watching.'

Jannelia nods at you.

Jannelia says 'I will not disappoint you Chloro Sedai.'

Chloro says 'We have kept you from your studies long enough. Light illumine you, Novice.'

Chloro gestures with her hand.

Jannelia clambers to her feet.

The door smoothly swings open.

Jannelia curtseys gracefully.

Jannelia says 'Thank you both again.'

Chloro nods in agreement.
