To the south a smaller street branches away from the road, heading into the private areas of the city, away from the crowded inns and streets. The north side of the street, though, is relatively empty, due to the presence of the fenced stockyard which exudes the odor of crowded animals, driving off even the most hardened innkeeper. Even the few buildings here on the edges of the city bear the trademark paint, easily enough to put a gleeman to shame, trying to lure in the travelling merchants and travelers on their way between Whitebridge and Caemlyn. The streets are visibly choked with horsecarts and wagons cast about in a haphazard manner, as though the owners didn't even care. To the east there seem to be some indications of life as there appears to be some trees and buildings in the distance. To the west the road continues into the flatlands between Whitebridge and Caemlyn. Now all that remains is the dry bottom and a ring of bushes that probably grew around the pond. Dark berries grow on several bushes. The pond looks as if it has been dry for quite some time, but there seem to be some fresher tracks that have come to this area. [ obvious exits: E W ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > e e In a Quiet Valley Pine-needles and fir-cones lie thickly on the ground here, the product of hundreds of seasons. A few trees grow out of the ground, leaning over in the winds that blow from far to the north. The valley continues north and east, and to the west is a dried out old pond. South is impenetrable woods. [ obvious exits: N E W ] A cute brown deer eyes you nervously. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > In a Quiet Valley The steepness of the rockface to the south and east provide an explanation for the stony ground, which is rough and hard-going. Only one pine-tree, very tall and obviously ancient, grows here, overlooking the remainder of the valley, to the north and west. The valley is secluded, and there are few signs of human or even animal life. [ obvious exits: N W ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > n In a Quiet Valley Ivy growing up the tree-trunks of enormous pine-trees make this valley seem a little darker than would be expected at first. This darkness, however, is not especially somber, but just the product of poor and stony soil. A quiet valley is east, south and west of you, and rising up from the ground to the north is a plateau. You can reach this plateau by climbing upwards through a path that runs alongside the cliff-side. [ obvious exits: E S W U ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > u A Windy Cliff You've found the cliffside path that allows you to go to the quiet valley, far below, or up to the higher Braem Wood, far above. The view from here is magnificent, as far to the south there is a town, although there is no way to get there from here. A beautiful wild rose grows in a crevice in the cliff-side, floating its scent over the area. From time to time, strong gusts of wind howl up the side of the plateau. [3] * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > u Higher Braem Wood This is the south-eastern corner of the higher Braem Wood, itself characterised by the pines and evergreens that thrive here. There is a thick carpet of pine-needles and fir-cones on the floor, the product of countless seasons. You can enter this aged forest to your north, or you can go down the path that runs down the side of the cliff. [ obvious exits: N D ] A torch is here on the ground. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > n n Higher Braem Wood The higher Braem Wood is very dense and tangled here due to years of uncontrolled growth, and it is tough-going through here. You can see far to the north and east, but there is no way to get there except through the Braem Wood south or west, or through the lower forested areas. Set in the depth of the forest, it is entirely covered by moss and there is no way of finding out what it once was. The Higher Braem Wood continues to your west and your east. A cute brown deer eyes you nervously. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > w Higher Braem Wood The Firs and Pines thin out a little here, and there are the charred remains of a once great tree rotting forlornly. Still, this forest is ancient and undisturbed, and there is no evidence of danger here. The higher Braem Wood goes on to your east, south and west from here. [ obvious exits: E S W ] A wooden cudgel lies on the ground here. A plump pheasant pecks at the ground. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > w Higher Braem Wood Tall trees thrust through the ground here in all directions, spreading their weighty branches that burst into masses of leaves. The small clearing here has been converted into a place of merryment, with large trellis tables laden with every type of food imaginable. Paper lanterns hang from the tree branches, giving a bright golden glow to the surroundings. The sound of flutes and harps and clear voices raised in song float down from the canopy, mixed in with laughter and chattering. Large fell shapes move on the eges of the clearing, lurching slowly in the twighlight. It seems the woods are watching. A handsome stag stands here, ready to run. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > n n Higher Braem Wood The clearing here has been converted into some type of arena, with the thick forest floor having been sweeped clean to reveal the dark earth beneath. Vines are tied around the closest trees, creating a sort of ring, and a large lantern hangs down from above, giving some illumination. The sounds of song and laughter can be heard to the south. A raven is here, watching. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > Higher Braem Wood Unlike the floor of the higher Braem Wood to the west and south, which is covered by pine-needles and fir-cones, the ground here has lots of brightly colored plants and flowers growing on it, and there seems to be a lot of life. This is easily explained by the massive mountain-willows growing here, that let in lots more light than evergreens. You cannot get to the grassy plain to the north and east. Far to the north you can see a grassy plain, but there does not seem to be a way to get there from here. the Higher Braem Wood continues to the east and the south. [ obvious exits: E S D ] A cute brown deer eyes you nervously. * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > d A Windy Cliff This, a ledge just under the northern end of the plateau that rises in the center of the Braem Wood, has fine views overlooking a vast golden colored plain far to the north. The grass seems to sway in the wind as the wind ripples over the plain, creating a wave-like effect. The Braem Wood itself is down below you, whilst the higher Braem Wood is just up from here. From time to time, strong gusts of wind howl up the side of the plateau. [ obvious exits: U D ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Tiring > d Braem Wood Stream This is not a fast-flowing or even deep stream, so some water-plants have been able to settle. Most striking of these is the spectacular water-lily, which has huge white flowers. Some other plants can be seen below the surface, hanging from the rocks that allow secure crossing. The branches from the willows by the stream almost touch the water, and it is quiet here. The stream continues east and west of here, and there is a way into the forest north. To the south is a plateau, which you can reach by going up. The stream is also west, but the bank is too steep so you cannot travel that way. The Braem Wood, with its towering oaks, continues north and east. The forest floor is covered by some sort of creeping plant and many different varieties of lichen. The air is growing quite stale here, making breathing difficult, and it is probably for that reason that no wildlife is visible anywhere! A path can barely be seen in the west and the forest continues to the east and north. To the south the forest lightens. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] A large swarm of mosquitoes is buzzing around your head. o S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Ancient Forest Ancient trees grow densely here, their crowns meeting to block out all light. Creeping plants and moss completely cover the forest floor and most go halfway up the trunks of most trees also. A feeling of serenity surrounds you. Unfortunately, the stale air robs you of any rest you could have hoped to enjoy in this locale. A huge tree dominates the forest in the east. The forest floor is covered in moss and decaying leaves, and the air is growing oppressive. The ancient forest continues to the east and west. [ obvious exits: E W U ] A frog is here, croaking happily. o S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Ancient Forest The dark, ancient forest is starting to frazzle your nerves. The gnarled oaks and other equally old trees seem to be moving to constrict your way out. Even the moss covered forest floor doesn't look so inviting anymore. To the south, a dense tangle of climbing plants and brushwood blocks your way. [ obvious exits: E W ] o S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > e eMedium Forest The trees are thinning out rapidly here, and the sky is visible through gaps in the foliage. The sound of water gurgling over rocks can be heard toward the east, where the forest seems to end. Looking west only reveals a multitude of gigantic trees, which completely block out the light in that direction. To the north, the forest thins out considerably. [ obvious exits: N E W ] A large swarm of mosquitoes is buzzing around your head. * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > n nYou can't seem to find anything to enter. * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Light Forest The trees in this part of the forest are made up mainly of widely spaced pines and oaks. Lush grass and thicket covers the floor of the forest and some very beautiful, dark blue flowers grow in patches in the grass. Looking to the east you discover a small stream and in the north, foothills roll toward a mountain range. To the south, there grows dense forest and a small path can be seen in the west. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > n n Foothills The hills are completely covered by grass and strewn rock and rubble. Here and there, small birches and pines dot the landscape. The rolling hills seem to get much taller toward the north, forming the foot of an impressive mountain range. [ obvious exits: S W ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Alas, you cannot go that way... * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > w nPath through the Hills The path slowly winds its way into the foothills of the mountain range that is visible toward the north. Small bushes flank the side of the path. At one time, it seems that wagons must have used the path, as faint tracks are still visible in parts of the dried earth. The secret of the maker of the cart tracks draws you further toward the mountains. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > n Path in the Mountains Travelling along this path is starting to become difficult because of the increasing altitude of the mountains. The path itself is remarkably clear of obstructions and bends from south to east, heading toward a small clearing. [ obvious exits: E S W ] A raccoon sniffs the ground for food. A small grasshopper hops from place to place. * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Alas, you cannot go that way... * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > w Plain before the Mountains The plain at this point runs right up to the beginning of the mountains. Lush grass carpets the ground and plays host to a multitude of small bugs and insects. The plain is broken here and there by small hills and trees. A path is visible in the east, running through the mountains. [ obvious exits: N E W ] A large swarm of mosquitoes is buzzing around your head. * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > n n Western Slope of the Mountains Upon entering this low mountain range, you begin to realise that it will be tough going here. The ground is scattered with rock fragments and pebbles, and the few clumps of grass growing here and there seem to be the only thing holding back an avalanche. After wandering for a while, you see the peak of the mountains a short way to the east. Going north would take you into some small foothills, west and south leads to open plains. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] A snake is lying on the ground here. * S HP:Wounded MV:Winded > Small Foothills Small, rolling hills lead toward the mountains in the east. Clumps of thorn bushes dot the slope of the hills here and there, along with small stands of short, straight trees. Grass covers all but one of the small hills. A large cliff rises up to the east, blocking any thought of going that way. To the south, a slope leads up to the mountains, plains can be seen in the west and the foothills continue to the north. Small Foothills Walking through these small foothills, it is often necessary to detour around clumps of thorn bushes, stands of trees and the occasional pile of rubble. It is not so bad however, as the land is covered in beautifully lush grass, which makes walking a pleasure. An impassable cliff rises to the east, meaning that you will either have to go west into the plains, north into a small stand of trees or continue along the foothills to the south. [ obvious exits: N S W ] * S HP:Hurt MV:Winded > Small Stand of Trees A small row of trees is planted here. Judging by the fields that lie to the east, they may well be intended as protection from the wind, or even as a screen against invading animals. To the east and south, you see wide, rolling plains, and the row of trees gives way to open, desolate looking hills to the north. A wind whips the tree tops from the north as if fleeing the hills. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] * S HP:Hurt MV:Winded > n n The Smooth Terrain A row of low trees has been planted to the south, perhaps to keep the constant winds that roll from the Black Hills to the north from eating away at the soil. Indeed, it seems that the grasses have retreated from the dry winds, seeking shelter beneath the trees; an occasional gust may gather some dust and pebbles and continue to smooth the ground with them. [ obvious exits: N E S W ] A crow is here flying around. * S HP:Hurt MV:Winded > The Rising Slope A sudden upward slope in the shape of the land clearly breaks the rough terrain to the north from the grassy plains towards the south. The soil is dark and hard, little more than solid clay in places, where the fertile topsoil has been swept up by the wind and blown away. Here are the first low hills and valleys that mark the Black Hills, a desolate land that reaches off to the north. In fact, there is no sign that any life has really survived here long; no dried weeds or fresh tracks remain long as a constant wind sweeps the ground. The Rough Terrain Just to the west of a towering peak amidst the hills, this place has collected many of the boulders and broken rock from the slope above. The slope itself is quite steep and unstable; somewhat impossible to climb. To the west, down some ways, a river bends through the hills. The hills continue to the south, and a wide path extends to the north. The constant work of the elements, which knock rocks down from above, and cut away at the foundation from below, will eventually wear this place away. I think in the end bullet counted 16 pukes that were against us there..... Anyway, that was fun will probably do it again tommorow.
